Fisher Braun knows how to keep a secret. As a covert paramilitary operative, his job—and his life—depends on it. He’s at the top of his game, ready for action and always in control. No enemy has ever brought him to his knees, but one lover has: Zachary Allen, the man currently sharing his bed. The perfect package of brains and brawn, Zach is someone worth coming home to, and Fisher hates keeping him in the dark about what he does. But the lies keep Zach safe. Until the day Fisher loses everything. . . .
Zachary Allen is no innocent civilian. Although he plays the tech geek, in reality he’s deep undercover for the CIA. In a horrible twist of fate, the criminal enterprise he’s infiltrated has set its sights on the man whose touch drives him wild. Zach would do anything for Fisher—except blow his own cover. Now, in order to save him, Zach must betray him first. And he needs Fisher to trust him with all his heart if they want to make it out alive.
What do I say about this book? Honestly, I’m torn because there’s a lot of good in it but there’s also some stuff that left me rather blah.
There is a ton of action and adventure in the book. If you like James Bond style thrillers then this is the book for you. There’s also James Bond-style romance, meaning not very much. I mean, yeah, like with Bond there’s some hot sexy scenes but it didn’t feel very romantic to me.
That’s something that was lacking here—the romance. Zach and Fisher are the main couple here but the book starts after they’ve been together and fallen in love. I understand the focus of the book was the action but it felt like I was dumped into the middle of the plot. Like I was just supposed to accept Zach and Fisher were in love. But I never felt it.
That’s not to say that the author isn’t a solid writer, because she is. Strong prose and dialogue and mostly error-free. Just missing a little heart, I guess. It didn’t help, for me anyway, that the story starts with a betrayal on Zach’s part. Well, kind of, but not really, but yes. Yeah, it’s kind of confusing at first but gets cleared up right away. The twists and turns were interesting but not enough for me to really get over Zach’s lies, even if Fisher did.
If what you’re looking for is a strong action story than I’d wholeheartedly recommend this book. But not if what you want is a strong, believable romance.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
