Web designer Jodi Peters is a solitary creature. Lunch twice a week with his ex-girlfriend-turned-BFF and the occasional messy venture to a dodgy gay bar is all the company he needs, right?

Then one night he stumbles across newly divorced firefighter Rupert O’Neil. Rupert is lost and lonely, but just about the sweetest bloke Jodi has ever known. Add in the heady current between them, and Jodi can’t help falling hard in love. He offers Rupert a home within the walls of his cosy Tottenham flat—a sanctuary to nurture their own brand of family—and for four blissful years, life is never sweeter.

Until a cruel twist of fate snatches it all away. A moment of distraction leaves Jodi fighting for a life he can’t remember and shatters Rupert’s heart. Jodi doesn’t know him—or want to. With little left of the man he adores, Rupert must cling to what remains of his shaky faith and pray that Jodi can learn to love him again.

Interview with Garrett Leigh

Recent Release Spotlight with Garrett Leigh.

  1. We are here today to talk about What Remains. What can you tell us about it?

What Remains is a story about love, loss, and recovery. Jodi and Rupert have been together a number of years when Jodi is involved in a horrific accident. He suffers a traumatic brain injury and life for him and Rupert is never the same.

  1. Please tell us more about our main characters.

Jodi is a web designer and a lot of fun until the accident. After, it takes time for us to get to know him again. Rupert is an Irish firefighter and the most gentle soul I’ve ever written.

  1. What about What Remains makes you the proudest?

Probably the double character arc I had to create for Jodi. I didn’t even see it until an ARC reviewer pointed it out, but I’m proud of the man we are left with at the end.

  1. What is next for these characters? Is there more to this series? If so who will we hear from next?

At the moment, this book is standalone, I’m afraid, which is a bit of a shame, because I do love these boys.

  1. If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would it be?

Write about it, don’t talk about it.

a. What one story made you lose sleep as a kid? – Junk, by Melvin Burgess
b. What’s your favorite thing to wear? – pyjamas, yo.

a. Do you ever abandon a draft partly written and just move on? Do you keep a file of plot ideas? – Yes, and yes. I have two books half written that I’ve run away from, and I have a file of potential blurbs for books and genres I’ll likely never write. I also have a stash of unused cover art.
b. Do you read your reviews, and if so do they influence the way you write the next book at all? – I don’t often read reviews unless they’re sent/tagged to me. Even good reviews can be massively distracting, so I tend to steer clear. I do wish I had time to write more reviews, though…or actually, read more books!

a. If you could be one of your characters who would you be and why? – I would be Seb, from Heart, because I am so desperate to give Dex a big cuddle.
b. If you could get one thing from a sex toy store without question, what would it be? – I think I have everything already 😛

a. If you had to be a cat, dog, or a rat, which would you choose and why? – I would be my labradoodle because she is without question the happiest dog on earth.
b. do you remember a character talking about a particular food and it made you want to eat it RIGHTNOW? and if yes, what was it? – Oh GOD, I’m a sucker for food writing, and it all began with Ash’s carbonara in Slide, and then the pizza, OOOOh, and Levi’s breakfast hash in Bullet, and then of course I started writing chefs and it was all over…

  1. What are you reading right now and what is next on your to-be-read list?

I’m reading Roller Girl by Vanessa North and LOVING it. After that, I’m reading Practice Makes Perfect by Jay Northcote.

  1. Rapid Fire Time (Note: Pick 8-10 of the following to answer)

Salt or Pepper? – Salt
Pickup Truck or Sedan? – Truck
Top or Bottom? – Both
Underwear and socks: – folded in the drawer or tossed? tossed
Cinnamon or maple? – maple
West Wing or Friday Night Lights? – West Wing
Mr. Bean or Leslie Nielsen? – Mr. Bean
Paddle or flogger? – All of it.
Peanuts or Cashews? – Both
Kanye or Beck? – Beck. Kanye’s a bell end.
Winter or Summer Olympics? – Summer
Sushi or pasta? – Pasta
Windows or Mac? – Mac
Call or text? – Text
Sex or Chocolate? – Sex
Red or White? – White
first pet and name? – Zelda cat
Shifters or Vampires? – Shifters
Favorite beverage? – Rooibos tea

Tax Audit or Enema? – Enema

  1. What are you working on? What is next?

Riptide’s Porthkennack series and another book in the Misfits world 🙂

About the Author

Garrett Leigh is a British writer and book designer, currently working for Dreamspinner Press, Loose Id, Riptide Publishing, and Black Jazz Press. Her protagonists will always always be tortured, crippled, broken, and deeply flawed. Throw in a tale of enduring true love, some stubbly facial hair, and a bunch of tattoos, and you’ve got yourself a Garrett special.

When not writing, Garrett can generally be found procrastinating on Twitter, cooking up a storm, or sitting on her behind doing as little as possible. That, and dreaming up new ways to torture her characters. Garrett believes in happy endings; she just likes to make her boys work for it.

Garrett also works as a freelance cover artist for various publishing houses and independent authors under the pseudonym G.D. Leigh. For cover art info, please visit

  1. Thank you for the interesting interview, Garrett. I love your books, anguish and all. What Remains is already in my TBR list

  2. Really enjoyed the Q&A. I really liked that answer for what you’re the proudest about. I just think it’s very cool to have made something that you didn’t even realize. That’s talent!
