After the birth of River and Josiah’s twin girls, pack tensions increase. The presence of rogue wolves, females, and humans have many pack members uncomfortable. In exchange for Leo’s help, Stone offers Leo the position of second alpha should Stone succeed in usurping River. Leo’s conflicted between his desire to rise in the pack, his dislike for Stone, and his increasing feelings for both Sam and Foster. Sam and Foster are best friends, but as a coyote shifter, Foster yearns for his true mate and doesn’t believe he will find him if he stays with the werewolves. Jax knows he must make a difficult decision before he’s turned out of the compound. When David finds out Brooks is considering mating Stone, he determines to stop it. The Angel Hills pack offer a deal in exchange for omegas for their pack.
Who is my favorite character in the series? Probably David. I always tend to become enamored with the quiet blond. David had quite a lot on his plate in all three books. In book one, it’s Josiah’s dislike for him and his own prejudice against humans. In book two, it’s his relationship with Jax, Brooks’ feelings for him, and the evil Bart Davis. In book three, David struggles even more with his pleasure in submitting to Jax in bed and how it contrasts with his identity as an alpha werewolf. He also begins to see that his relationship with Jax may not last.
Excerpt from Third Mate:
They lay side-by-side, Jax on his back and David still on his stomach, face turned away.
“I’m fine,” David said quietly.
Jax stared out the window for several moments. “If it makes you feel this bad, don’t ask for it.”
David rolled over. “You think it’s that easy? Just a matter of choosing?”
“Isn’t it?” Jax raised an eyebrow.
“Fuck, no, it isn’t. Ever since I bottomed for you the first time, I want it now. But it makes me feel…”
“Less of a man?”
“Less of an alpha. I know you don’t really know what that means, but that doesn’t make it any less important.” David’s eyes were accusing.
“Hey, I do my best to understand, but I’m at a loss here. What am I supposed to do when, after a bout of mind-blowing sex, the man I love acts like it degraded him? I’ve read all the books on werewolves I could find, but none of them deal with this issue.”
David sat up, cock now limp between his legs. “That’s because it isn’t an issue. Werewolf alphas don’t bottom. So what does that say about me? And I don’t feel degraded. I just…gods, I don’t know. It’s really hard to explain.”
“It’s not like anyone else knows,” Jax said softly. “And I certainly don’t think any less of you for it. There’s nothing I love more than being inside you.”
David looked down at his hands. “I’m glad you like it. I do, too.”
“And that’s the problem, right? As an alpha, you feel you shouldn’t enjoy having a cock in your ass.”
“Other alphas don’t bottom. Why am I willing to?”
“How do you know they don’t bottom? Just because it isn’t in books or other alphas don’t tell you? For all you know, River takes it up the ass from Josiah sometimes.”
David chuckled. “I highly doubt that.” When Jax only glared, David continued, “Mainly because an omega isn’t likely to ever top someone, particularly an alpha.”
“Josiah’s half-human, so he’s a bit different.”
David seemed to think that over.
“Look, you shouldn’t need to know that River or another alpha does it on occasion to make it okay for you. You need to realize that there’s nothing wrong with you just because you’re into switching.”
David hung his head. “I know you’re right. I just can’t seem to convince my ego of that.”
Jax moved closer to David and wrapped his arms around the man. “I love you,” he said into the crook of David’s neck. “You’re the manliest alpha in this pack.”
David laughed, pulling away from Jax and kissing him. Even though David had wanted it, Jax couldn’t help but feel like a heel for making him question himself yet again. There was a reason alphas mated with betas and omegas. They needed the submission, and that was something Jax could never fully give David.
David’s mouth was an addiction in itself. Jax spent long moments exploring with lips and tongue before they finally slid out of bed and went to take a shower.
