The business of life is the acquisition of memories ~ Carson from Downton Abbey
After the tragic events in Orlando in June, my publisher, JMS Books, announced a charity anthology to benefit the victims and their families. At first, I set aside the idea of participating to the side. Submissions needed to be contemporary and under 5000 words. I hadn’t written either contemporary or a short story in my short writing career and didn’t plan on it any time soon.
But something gnawed at me until I sat down at the computer and starting writing my submission. I have had a story idea for a long time, but struggled with it’s historical setting. Since the call required a contemporary setting, the idea was perfect for this project. Cutting the submission down to only 5000 words was also a challenge.
But I did it. I stretched my wings and the short story, Jackpot!, was accepted into the Love is Proud anthology from JMS Books! I wrote the story in six days and took another week to cut it down. Writing the story helped me get back in the habit of daily writing which I’ve been out of habit since December of last year.
One of my writing partners is submitting a sequel to her BSDM book. I don’t normally read (or practice, LOL) BSDM, but her writing is awesome and makes me want to delve more into the world she’s created. Again, not my usual subgenre of gay romance, but a stretch from my usual reading. I’d miss out on some great storytelling if I chose not to read her submissions every week.
Do you stick with the same sub-genre of romance reading or do you take it all in? I’d love to hear!
