Chance “The Chancellor” Gerhardt is a mainstay for Frontier Professional Wrestling. He’s won multiple championships and has the respect of the locker room. But after ten years at the top, Chance is looking for a new challenge. The one he gets, mentoring FPW’s young rookie, is both unexpected and unwanted.
Devin Jacobs is a hot new talent signed by Frontier Professional Wrestling. He’s always been a fan of The Chancellor, and not just because of the older man’s skill in the ring. He has it bad for the steely eyed veteran wrestler. Unfortunately for Devin, The Chancellor doesn’t believe in mixing business with pleasure, and isn’t looking to get involved with anyone. Or is he? During long nights traveling and working together, Devin catches more than one secretly admiring glance from The Chancellor…
Devin is determined to earn victories and championships in the ring. But he’d also love the opportunity to win Chance’s heart. Can the two of them navigate their way through the hyper masculinity and backstage politics of professional wrestling to the most important victory of all? Or will their shot at love be defeated 1-2-3?

Hello! I’m Christa Tomlinson. Thank you for checking out my guest blog post today. I’m here to share a little bit about my upcoming release, Showing Him the Ropes. This book tells the story of Chance and Devin, two men who find love in the world of professional wrestling.
I was inspired to start writing this series because I’m a big fan of professional wrestling. I have been for most of my life. When I started writing m/m romance, I realized wrestling was the perfect setting for a book. But Showing Him the Ropes doesn’t take place in just one location. I wanted to show the hectic travel schedule that wrestlers have, so they move all over the country throughout the story.
But there is one city that I gave a little extra attention to: St. Louis, Missouri. Devin, lives there and I have several important things take place in that city. Why? Because that’s where I’m from! I live in Houston, Texas now, but I still love my hometown. So I had to show St. Louis a little love. Here’s an excerpt:
Devin stared at Chance. He didn’t know where this was coming from, especially since they’d been having such a good time together. He started to try and convince Chance none of this was necessary. Until he realized he shouldn’t have to. He’d agreed to keep things a secret between them and hadn’t done anything to indicate he wouldn’t continue to keep that secret. Devin turned his back on his lover, barely bothering to look over his shoulder as he put an end to the conversation.
“You know what? Fuck you, Chancellor.”
His timing couldn’t have been better. Just then, his music hit and Devin burst through the curtain. He was still pissed, but when he heard the roar of the crowd that anger faded to the back of his mind. He was here to wrestle in front of his hometown crowd. Devin raised his arms, the red angel wings coming up on the screen behind him just as the announcer introduced him from St. Louis, Missouri. Somehow the audience got even louder with their cheers. Devin looked out over the arena, seeing signs that people had drawn with his name or likeness. There were several that said: Welcome Home Red Angel!
Devin grinned and ran down the ramp. After he flipped over the top rope into the ring, he jumped up on the second rope of each corner, getting the crowd hyped up. The only way this could be better would be if his parents were in the arena. But his mother had come down with the flu, so they couldn’t make it. They’d promised they’d get to the next show when FPW was in Missouri again.
Devin jumped down as his music quieted. Then the highbrow, yet ominous sounding orchestra music for The Chancellor boomed throughout the arena. Devin stood in the middle of the ring, watching his opponent come down the ramp. Normally he was happy and excited to wrestle Chance. Tonight, not so much.
Chance climbed the steel steps and stepped between the ropes. Devin deliberately waited until the last second to get out of the way so Chance could do his run-down of the crowd. But tonight, Devin didn’t let him get all the way through his promo. He was the hometown boy, and Mr. Mercer had given him permission to defend his city. As Chance was talking, Devin went to the ropes and leaned over for the mic the ring announcer held up to him.
“This city is detestable. Old and small, the streets filled with trash. The only thing it has going for it is a slightly interesting piece of metal in front of a muddy section of the Mississippi.”
The crowd booed at The Chancellor’s insults. Devin tapped on the microphone, purposely loud and obnoxiously until Chance stopped talking. “Hey, Chancellor! Seems to me you haven’t been properly welcomed to the Gateway City. So after I kick your ass tonight, I’ll take you out for some Imo’s Pizza!” Now the crowd cheered at the mention of the St. Louis landmark. Devin grinned and tossed the mic to the announcer. Chance handed his over too, glaring at him the whole time.
I loved getting the chance to sneak in a few shout outs to St. Louis and some of its landmarks. But Chance and Devin move from city to city as they work their way from barest acquaintances to lovers. I hope you’ll go along and join them on their journey.
Thanks for reading!
