Title: Never Lose Your Flames
Author: Francis Gideon
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Cover Artist: AngstyG
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: 08/01/2016
Cop-turned-bounty hunter Gabe Dominguez is hired to capture firestarter Nat Wyatt. For a dragon-shifter like Gabe, apprehending Nat is easy, but transporting him involves more time, energy, and blood loss than he envisioned. An attack from a band of fairies, an out-of-control forest fire, and a showdown at an auction don’t faze Gabe, but Nat’s innocence might stop him entirely.
Since discovering his abilities, Nat’s lost a best friend, a boyfriend, and trust in his brother. Only his love of concerts and card games get him through life without a home. Rumors of the Judge, a giant dragon who once destroyed half of Canada avenging those he loved, provide Nat with hope of vindication. When Nat discovers his captor is the Judge, he thinks he’s finally caught a break. Through late-night conversations and a shared love of music, Nat tries to convince Gabe he’s not guilty.
Can Gabe continue his cutthroat lifestyle, or will he run away with his dragon hoard like he’s always longed to do? Can Nat escape his legacy, or will his be another spark snuffed out by people who don’t understand? The Oracle, the most powerful wizard in Canada, might be the only one who can provide answers.
Songs for Mood
Hello readers! I’d like to tell you about my upcoming release, out August 1st, entitled Never Lose Your Flames. It’s an urban fantasy, slow-burn romance complete with a quest narrative. The two leads are Gabe, a former cop turned bounty-hunter who is sent after a firestarter named Nat who has been accused of arson. While they are attracted to one another when they meet, as soon as Gabe realizes Nat is his next case, their relationship changes and they embark on a long road trip to finally deliver Nat to his bosses.
I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, but I do want to give readers a taste. Whenever I write, I try to think of a song that embodies the mood of the story. The lyrics may not ever match up (in fact, I like it when they don’t) but the music has to carry that same feeling. The song for this book is easily “Exit Wounds” by Placebo. It’s a gritty intense song that relates to much of the chase scenes and desperation in the latter half of the book, but it’s also filled with desire. Brian Molko (the singer) has always been great about writing songs that are full of sex appeal–but keeping the genders involved ambiguous, so it can apply to everything and everyone. This is no exception and I certainly hope you enjoy it!
This supernatural world has been one of my favourites to play in, and I’m super excited that I won’t have to stop. Dreamspinner has contracted my second book in the series called Black Market Blood, involving two peripheral characters from this book. Gabe and Nat will show up as well, but since they get their happy ending, there is no more chasing for them to do.
Whereas Never Lose Your Flames is a supernatural quest narrative, the second book focuses more on the gritty crime world of noir and an escalating case of murders in Toronto (also known as The City of Monsters). The lead will be vampire, who often relies on black market blood from a brothel in order to survive–and where he soon meets a worker who may hold the key to solving everything. The title is a reference to the vamp’s blood, but it’s also yet another reference to Placebo. Their album of the same name contains so many great songs, but “Spite & Malice” probably sums up the next book the best.
Thank you for reading!
