Three days. Three questions. Three answers.
Kidnapped, blindfolded, and bound to a bed, running away isn’t an option any more for Will Chambers. Despite being a linguistic tutor and having every conversational tool at his disposal, all Will wanted to do was fade into the background, become lost in the echo of wild heath and harbour. But now someone wants to put his body and mind on full display, force Will to find his voice—answer three questions, over three days. All Will has to do is provide three… simple… answers.
This short story packs quite a punch – well it is Jack Pyke so we shouldn’t be surprised. It’s also an extremely difficult book to review without giving too much away.
Although the blurb gives you an idea of what to expect the story is far darker than that. It’s difficult to follow initially, purposefully so, as what use is a psychological thriller if it doesn’t twist and turn?
Will is not in a good place – he’s living with grief, guilt and a myriad of feelings he doesn’t know what to do with. It surprised me the more we got to know him that he was managing to function as well as he did in everyday life, especially when it came to interacting with Ryan, that must have been like a slap in the face and a constant reminder.
Elliot is not in a good place – he has lost everything and is on the point of giving up. A new home and a new job but what about everything from his old life that he still holds dear? He’s cockier than Will, at least on the outside, but he still hurts as much as the other man – maybe even more sometimes.
Then Will is kidnapped. What should have been a trip to try and heal, a safe place where he could just be, becomes a nightmare. 3 days – 3 questions but who wants the answers and what will it mean? This was clever and will definitely take you out of your comfort zone!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
