Forget winter blues. Summer is when I feel off-kilter. The heat saps my energy and everything feels exhausting and a little dull. Setbacks feel insurmountable.
There may be predictions for ninety degree weather this coming week, but I can feel the shifting seasons. The nights are cooler, the birds are on the move, and I feel the change of energy down to my bones.
The only things I’ll miss are the swims I’ve been taking three times a week. Friday was the last day the beach at the local park is open and I tried to soak it all in. I’ll miss the buoyant freedom and the sweet slide of cool water over my skin. I’ll miss the meditative trance I sink into after a few laps. I’ll miss the drowsy feeling behind the eyes and the Champagne fizz sensation at the crown of my head as I fall into a rhythm. I’ll miss the ache of sore muscles and the pleasant exhaustion as I float on the surface of the water and let my breathing slow.
But I’ll trade in my swimsuits for sweaters. I’ll give it up for cool nights and crisp air. Bonfires and hot tea.
Right now, late summer tomatoes are simmering on the stove, being turned into roasted tomato soup.
The promise of fall sings in my veins and change is on the horizon.
Everything feels possible.
