Fireman Mason James thought finding out he is a Romanus—a rare class of gargoyle—would be the surprise of a lifetime, but he’s proven wrong when he discovers he is the son of a comte and goji nobility. But his newly discovered family doesn’t think his gargoyle lover, Luc, is good enough for a goji of Mason’s stature—how could a warrior ever be? But despite the Moreaus’ uncertainty and elitism, they are Mason’s only chance to unravel the mystery behind his mother’s death, find a solution for the class divide that might separate him from Luc, and discover what it truly means to be a Romanus.
Caroline reviewed the ebook of Chevalier here.
I enjoyed Chevalier but not quite as much as Romanus.
It was great to see Mason and Luc again and to see that their passion is as strong as it was in the first book, but was there really a doubt.
In this tale Mason learns about his true heritage and meets his biological father and siblings. It’s not really a happy reunion though and Mason learns a lot of things he’d maybe rather not have known.
There was a lot of information provided in the book mainly about Mason’s past, gargoyle history and his true role as romanus. It was all necessary world-building information but it slowed the plot at times. There wasn’t much action until the very end.
Despite the somewhat predictable ending and the slow pace of the novella I still enjoyed the story and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it, but only if you’ve read Romanus. Anyone not having read the first book would probably be lost here. Plus that book is all kinds of fabulous.
Greg Tremblay is one of the best narrators in the business. Here he not only nailed Mason’s inner and outer voices but also a plethora of characters with accents.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
