This is the story of Evan and Rick. Fast and close friends since their kindergarten days in a small town, their friendship evolves into the love of their lives. They move to the big city where they meet Billy and Charlie and these four friends are soon inseparable. Mioki presents a moving portrait of gay life with all its highs and lows. Drawn in a sure style and masterfully incisive, Mioki’s comic is a joy to read, is moving and the sex also doesn’t get short shrift. A charming comic for the young and the young-at-heart.
Side by Side and Still Side by Side are marvelously written and illustrated books of love between young men over a period of time.
Evan and Rick are the focus of most of the first book while the focus shifts in the second one.
Side by Side starts with a young Evan and Rick as young friends and they stay close when Rick comes out to him. They eventually start a no-strings attached sexual relationship even though Evan doesn’t readily acknowledge his sexuality. It takes Evan moving out of their small town for both men to realize exactly how strong their feelings for each other are.
Rick follows Evan to the big city and they begin a relationship—meaning lots and lots of sex. Mioki has a distinct, realistic style of drawing that isn’t too cartoony. The illustrations of Rick and Evan doing all sorts of things to each other is graphic without being pornographic. It’s a very enjoyable style.
We’re introduced to Evan’s friends Bill and Charlie and are immediately treated to a very hot foursome with Rick and Evan. Despite their open relationship Rick and Evan remain strongly in love.
Still Side by Side continues the stories of Rick and Evan and Bill and Charlie. I was much more interested in Rick and Evan’s tale and while they are involved the main story is about Charlie and his sugar daddy older man lover.
All the stories are very interesting and the art is simply great. I read the first book years back and enjoyed it just as much this time.
