We all have tragic backstories in today’s world.
I wake up chained to the wall of a dark cell aware of two things: I failed my sister, and I smell my enemy.
When I’m taken to meet Dare, the alpha of the Silver Tip pack, I’m sure I’m about to lose my throat. The last thing I expect is for the Alpha to recognize me as his fated mate. No way is he going to let me go now, and I still have to find a way to rescue my sister.
As I plot my escape to save her, I find that if I leave, Dare could be killed by power-hungry members of his pack. And now he’s more to me than my fated mate—my heart is involved. With time ticking by on my sister’s life, I have to make a choice I never thought I’d face—my sister’s life or my mate’s? That’s if I can survive the undead shifters intent on killing me first…
My first Megan Erickson book and I certainly picked a winner!
Shifter stories especially ones with wolves are my craic. I’ve said before they are often formulaic and that I don’t mind that at all but there is nothing formulaic about Daring Fate. This is fresh, dark and gripping. Set in a futuristic world where humans are extinct and Weres and wolves are fighting to live. When a virus hit the weres turning them into zombies known as Noweres life for everyone changed. Humans were soon wiped out and the shifter packs now live behind walls only venturing outside their gates when absolutely necessary. There is little trust in this new society and Weres and wolves tend not to mix – instead they create stories about each other that drives the mistrust even deeper.
Reese and his siblings Jude and Selene belonged to a pack of wolves that were attacked and decimated by the Noweres. Asking for sanctuary within another pack was the start of a nightmare for all three of them which saw Reese beaten, starved, overworked and finally thrown out beyond the safety of the pack walls and left for dead. Jude manages to get him to safety but that safety is relative when his brother has just put them among a pack of Weres and the creatures are looking at them as though they are their next meal.
Dare is the Alpha of the Silver Tip Pack and absolutely everything about him screams dominant and in charge. He has a reputation for being cold and hardnosed but when you look more closely he has layers and although none of his layers are fluffy there are softer ones that endear him to those he is close to. The minute Dare meets Reece he knows the wolf is his true mate – and so it begins.
These guys are HOT together and although they have the compatible sex down really, really quickly there are problems. Reece is keeping a pretty big secret from his mate that may require them to separate and separation equals pain. Not everyone in Dare’s pack is pleased their Alpha has found his mate – some see Reece as a weak link to an otherwise strong leader.
Although this story concentrates on Reese and Dare there are a number of well fleshed out secondary characters that we will hopefully see much more of as the series progresses. I’m excited to see where the author takes this world next and hopeful that we will get Bay’s story pretty soon and that it involves a certain Were whose name we shall not mention…
The story is gripping the writing is dark and the sex is hotter than exploding lava – there is only one thing wrong with this story and that’s that we now have to wait until next year for book 2!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
