While surfing YouTube recently, we stumbled across many vlogs from gay guys sharing their dating experiences. We listened to tales of horror dates, perfect men that drifted away, and Mr Rights who became obsessive stalkers. Many of these videos are titled ‘Grindr Stories’ and provide rich material for Male to Male Romance writers.

The concept of stars being born from the internet fascinates me, as many of these confessionals were from guys with huge followings. As a writer you are usually looking for ways to promote yourself but I’m not sure I’d go as far as regularly vlogging. I’m from an age that finds it hard to live life publicly. I think most authors are. But we can learn a lot from those who know how to promote themselves.

As we continued watching these dating stories, we found many of these guys liked to play the ‘star’. They deluded their entertainment value as they droned on and on about things that weren’t that interesting. Then we discovered a young man whose social media handle is Andrew Goes Places.

AndrewGoesPlaces

He seemed much more down to earth. He loved dating taller guys, and like most young gays, dated often. And before you brand me a dirty old man, I found watching him took me back many years, reminiscing about my single days when I was still finding who I was. No matter when you were born, finding love, sex and romance in your early adult life will always have its challenges. Andrew’s stories, like many of these vloggers, are universal.

A year ago he posted My Coming Out Experiencehttps://youtu.be/U0V7-CmsEOk – where he looks so much younger than he does now. Seriously! And only a year has gone by.

But this video is one of the sweetest. His tale is one of acceptance. Of a loving family that support him. And while he acknowledged that many GLBT people aren’t so lucky, he reminded those that are, not to take this acceptance for granted. He reminded people like me to thank my family for their love. He’s right. We often don’t appreciate their support as much as we should.

So thank you to all, whatever side of the sexual fence you sit on, who have nurtured me through my life, making me the confident individual I am today. And thanks especially to my family who have accepted me and my long term partner from the beginning. Your love is priceless.

About Kevin Klehr

Kevin lives with his long-term partner, Warren, in their humble apartment (affectionately named Sabrina), in Australia’s own ‘Emerald City,’ Sydney.

From an early age Kevin had a passion for writing, jotting down stories and plays until it came time to confront puberty. After dealing with pimple creams and facial hair, Kevin didn’t pick up a pen again until he was in his thirties. His handwritten manuscript was being committed to paper when his social circumstances changed, giving him no time to write. Concerned, his partner, Warren, snuck the notebook out to a friend who in turn came back and demanded Kevin finish his novel. It wasn’t long before Kevin’s active imagination was let loose again.

Kevin’s first novel, Drama Queens with Love Scenes, has been relaunched via Wilde City Press along with the sequel, Drama Queens with Adult Themes. Plus his Romance ebook, Nate and the New Yorker is out now.
