Recent Release Spotlight with Derrick Knight
We are here today to talk about Truly a Miracle. What can you tell us about it?
Truly a Miracle is my second novel in the Innkeeper Series. This book is about Dustin Hurst and Nathaniel Schmitt’s journey of fulfilling their dreams of creating a family. Unfortunately, their aspirations don’t go as planned, when Natalie goes into preterm labor.
Truly documents Dustin and Nathaniel’s experiences when their children are admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit fighting to survive. Truly is a medical drama where Dustin and Nathaniel relationship is tested at every moment, as a couple and as fathers struggling to make sure their family is safe and complete.
Please tell us more about our main characters.
Dustin Hurst is an introverted college professor. He teaches biology at the local college. Dustin’s parents, both academics themselves, raised him to conceal his emotions and deal with life’s situations as a scientist would rationally and objectively and without any drama.
Nathaniel Schmitt is the opposite of Dustin. Nathaniel is outgoing, at times sarcastic, and wears his emotions on his sleeve. Nathaniel suffers from a severe case of obsessive-compulsive disorder, often times, complicating his life.
Nathaniel is one of six children (3 boys and 3 girls). Family is very important to him and he has an overwhelming desire to have children. He’s desperate to have a happy family just like his brothers and sisters.
What do you want to tell those who may be new to the series (if applicable)?
The Innkeeper Series is about a group of gay men who have been friends since childhood. They live in the small town of Glasburg, Illinois.
Innkeeper is meant to be a gay Peyton Place-type drama. Each of the men are in a successful relationships and comfortable with their sexualities. Also, they are accepted by their families and friends.
In each book will focus on a couples’ life. They deal with an adverse or complicated event, which poses a threat to the stability of their relationships. .
What about Truly a Miracle makes you the proudest?
In this book I was able to incorporate my own educational and work experiences into this novel. For over nineteen years I’ve worked as a dietitian in the largest neonatal intensive care unit in Illinois outside of Chicago. I’ve seen many families experience a rollercoaster of emotions as they hope and pray for their children’s rapid and safe recovery.
The input and nutritional care plans that the dietitian character Matt comes up with in the story are based on practices and ideas that I’ve implemented. Over the years, I’ve witnessed the importance of good nutrition has on infants who are born too early.
What is next for these characters? Is there more to this series? If so who will we hear from next?
After Truly, Dustin and Nathaniel will return to being secondary characters in the Innkeeper series.
The third book will focus on Dwyer Von Strohm and John Fitzgerald’s dealing with a powerful enemy, from their past, who was responsible for destroying their relationship many years ago. This adversary returns to town with a diabolical plan to destroy Dwyer and John’s newly rekindled romance once and for all. This villain has the perfect weapon in their arsenal to damage Dwyer and John’s love forever.
In future books, I will explore the artist David Smith’s past and his search for the identity of his father.
If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would it be?
Never give up. Write because you enjoy the craft not because you want fame or fortune. True success is being happy with the stories you produce and share with your audience.
What was your inspiration for this story? This book is based on true events.
Do you have a character in your head that you have yet to write a story for? I have a character inside my head who wants to tell his story. He’s an intellectual handsome man whose hard life as a child has molded him into to a person who wants revenge on those who scorned him.
If you could be any Disney character who would you be, and why? Even though I’m not a female, I think Elsa is a wonderful character. I think Elsa having to hide who she really is so familiar for many gay people still living in the closet.
If you could be one of your characters who would you be and why? Matt Bachmeier is my alter ego, but he has all my best qualities and not of my many faults.
If you had to be a cat, dog, or a rat, which would you choose and why? I would be a tiger because they’re such majestic looking animals.
In Harry Potter, what one spell would you have written in that JK Rowling didn’t? A spell to control weather
