Talon Valdez knew when he transformed into an enhanced human, his life and his dreams were finished. Reviled, mistrusted, and often locked away, the enhanced were viewed as monsters, despised by the public, and never trusted to serve in the military or any law enforcement agency.

Years later he gets a chance to set up a task force of enhanced to serve in the FBI, but with one proviso: each enhanced must partner with a regular human.

Finn Mayer dreamed of joining the FBI from the time he was fourteen and made every possible sacrifice to make it happen, including living with his selfish mother and bullying, homophobic brother and never having a boyfriend. But his undiagnosed dyslexia stopped his aspirations dead in their tracks. His last chance is to partner with Talon, an enhanced with deadly abilities who doesn’t trust regular humans with their secrets and wants Finn to fail.

Four weeks to prove himself to the team. Four weeks for the team to prove itself to the public. And when another group threatens their success—and their lives are at stake—four weeks for them to survive.

My View:

Something very different from Victoria Sue – there was not a wolf in sight!

Five Minutes Longer is the first book in a new series and it drops us into the world of enhanced humans and their first foray into law enforcement – think X Men and you will be on the right track. Enhanced humans are reviled by the general public and also their families in a lot of cases. It is just something that happens – it can happen to anyone and there are a lot of kids that end up in an unfair care system just because they wake up one day with that small identifying mark.

Talon Valdez is enhanced and he is the leader of a small team who are working secretly with the FBI in a new initiative but there is one huge stumbling block that is preventing them from moving forward – they each must work with a human partner and so far they have chased away every applicant that has walked through the door. There is more going on with some of these men than it appears, there are ‘other’ powers that aren’t talked about openly and this book really sets up the series well.

Finn Mayer has one dream but it seems it’s just out of his reach. He has always wanted to join the FBI but it seems everything conspires against him – his home life is dreadful and he just needs to get away. I liked Finn immediately – he is such a scrappy person dogged and determined. Offered a chance to enter a new and secret team Finn jumps at the chance and it’s clear from the start that the enhanced members don’t quite know what to make of him. Finn’s character and good nature slowly win the team over but Talon remains suspicious and scared of how Finn makes him feel.

The sign of a good first book in a new series is when the reader can’t wait for the next one and I definitely cannot wait! It feels as though there should be a bit more to Talon and Finn’s story and I am very excited for Eli’s – he is the mystery man of the group for me and I want to know his secrets.
