The Day After

Sigh. . .

Nachos & Hash, the first novella of the Mary’s Boys series was released yesterday. The day after release day is always strange. You’ve spent months and months and months with these characters. From planning and researching (which, for a series of novellas, there was a surprising amount of research), to the writing and endless edits. THEN the promotions, blog tours, harassment of everyone that will listen to you on Facebook that your book is coming, your book is coming.

Release day happens, and then it’s gone.

You’re supposed to keep promoting, but you already feel like you’ve beaten people over the head with it. You check sales, you check reviews (even though you told yourself you wouldn’t), you feel a strange mix of relief and a combo of fear/longing as you let your characters go. You raised them right. It’s up to them to fly, to wing their way into readers’ hearts. You look around and see all the other release day posts that are happening today, and you realize, your characters were yesterday. So, you write some more and the cycle continues.

But the Thing with this thing of all things that we do. The Thing with writing and writers. It’s as close to immortality as we can get. Nachos & Hash is a sweet little romance. There’s no earth shattering revelations within its pages, no solution leading world peace, but yet, it is part of my attempt at immortality.   Maybe no one will read it the day after release day. BUT. . . maybe someone will a month from now, a year from now, a decade from now. And for those few hours (or many hours, if you’re a slow reader like me), those characters that have a piece of my soul will take someone else on little journey. They will cause them to laugh and cry. To let the reader watch as they fall in love, and maybe even cause the reader to fall in love themselves. And no matter when or where that occurs, even if it’s after I’m gone (dramatic I know, but true nonetheless), my soul will still sing.

I know this post had little to do with Nachos & Hash. As I’ve stated before, I’ve promoted the shit outta this thing. You’re either interested in it or you’re not. Of course I hope you are. I hope you’re captivated by it so much that you have to read all of my other books and that you then show up at my door, pounding it because you demand more stories (be warned, I won’t answer, I’m a recluse). But, even if you don’t do any of those things, I thought I’d let you in on what the day after release day is like for an author. At least for this author.

Thank you for these few minutes, much love to you. Now go read something that touches your soul and allows you to see into the soul that created it.

About the Author

Brandon Witt’s outlook on life is greatly impacted by his first eighteen years of growing up gay in a small town in the Ozarks, as well as fifteen years as a counselor and special education teacher for students with severe emotional disabilities. Add to that his obsession with corgis and mermaids, then factor in an unhealthy love affair with cheeseburgers, and you realize that with all those issues, he’s got plenty to write about….

  1. LOL! Thank you for the post and the blog tour. You have certainly intrigued me, and I’ve added Nachos & Hash to my TBR list… Taking into account how much I like your books, do not be surprised if I am one of those showing up at your door, pounding it because I demand more stories! 😉

  2. Thank you for the final post of the tour, Brandon. I admit I can’t read this right after release day because I have currently reading titles as well. But it’s there, on my Kindle. I love the cover of this one so I am expecting the sweet little romance 🙂

  3. Congrats and thanks for the post and giveaway. I like the idea of Hamburger Mary’s, I have a soft spot for it – I live near one in Chicago, and I went to one as part of my first coming out in DC.

  4. Congrats on the release. I can’t say when I’ll read this but someday I will. And I promise I won’t show up beating on your door demanding more. Not because I won’t want more but because that’s just rude!

  5. Congrats on the new release! Thank you for the post, it was interesting. Sorry I haven’t gotten around to reading it. Time has been getting away from me and I haven’t been able to do a lot of reading.
