Check-in for a night at the boutique Benton Hotel, where the motto is “we’re not satisfied until you are”, with this collection of three sweet and sexy short stories.
In Watch Me, a hotel clerk makes a surprising discovery about his colleague’s personal life, and an even more unexpected discovery about himself when he borrows a uniform, while a married man looking to spice things up finds a night of passion when he meets a stranger in a hotel pub in Wedded. Finally, in Wanted, a young man exploring his sexuality gets more than he bargained for from his hook-up.

Loving Leftovers

Who doesn’t like leftovers, right? Personally, sometimes I think they’re better than the original meal. I love taking leftovers and turning them into something completely new. So it’s no surprise that throughout the five years I’ve been writing, I’ve amassed a folder of half-formed ideas, character studies, random scenes or simply cool opening sentences. Some are leftovers from previous works, some are tidbits of inspiration waiting to be born into full fledged stories. Regardless, nothing gets thrown out. I file it away on the off chance that one day, it might become part of larger novels or novellas.

A few months ago, as I was copying files over to a new laptop, I went through my ideas folder again. Realistically, some were never going to be enough for a longer work, but rather than have them go to waste, I considered bundling a few together in a short story collection. Sure, short stories are a hard sell in this genre, but I happen to enjoy them. So why not just do it? And that is how Do Not Disturb was born.

[insert cover image and word wrap] There are three stories in this collection. I’m calling these shorts erotic romance because they’re more explicit than what I usually write, but they still retain a sweet, romantic sensibility and of course, a HFN. They all began life independently over a period of years, but strangely enough a hotel featured in two out of the three, and so it was that I decided to set them all in the fictional Benton Hotel, whose motto is “we’re not satisfied until you are”.

Watch Me sprang from a desire to write something where a character was a webcammer. The idea kicked around for a while before I finally settled on the current incarnation specifically for this collection. The inspiration for Wedded came from an episode of Modern Family, although I can’t reveal more without spoiling it, and was a chance for me to get a bit more creative. Wanted is the oldest of the bunch. I kept hoping it would find a home, but it never did. It was inspired by a post I found on Craigslist a couple of years ago. So inspired in fact, that I used most of the original post in the story.

In the end, what began as leftovers have become yummy creations of their own. Bon apetit!

About the Author

Chris Scully lives in Toronto, Canada. She grew up spinning romantic stories in her head and always dreamed of one day being a writer even though life had other plans. Her characters have accompanied her through career turns as a librarian and an IT professional, until finally, to escape the tedium of a corporate day job, she took a chance and began putting her daydreams down on paper several years ago.

Tired of the same old boy-meets-girl stories, she found a home writing gay romance and strives to give her characters the happy endings they deserve. She divides her time between a mundane 9-5 cubicle job and a much more interesting fantasy life. When she’s not working or writing (which doesn’t leave for much time these days) she loves puttering in the garden and traveling. She is an avid reader and tries to bring pieces of other genres and styles to her stories. While her head is crammed full of all the things she’d like to try writing, her focus is always on the characters first. She describes her characters as authentic, ordinary people—the kind of guy you might meet on the street, or the one who might be your best friend.

Although keeping up with social media is still a struggle given her schedule, she does love to hear from readers.

  1. Hi Chris, this sounds like a fun book. I love leftovers too. Some of one or two days and then combine them into one new dish. The trouble I have though is that the new dish is too much and I have new leftovers. I once read this is called ‘chain cooking’.
