When State Trooper Travis Kinslow is injured right before Thanksgiving, the only positive is that for once he won’t be working during the holidays. Since he has no family, Travis was absorbed into his best friend, Joe’s, and he considers them as good as his own. Everyone except Joe’s brother Noah. Travis has been in love with the younger man for much of his life, but he’s always kept his distance.

As an ER nurse, Noah is a caretaker by nature. When his brother’s best friend is hurt, he’s happy to help Travis while he heals. He’s only ever allowed himself to think of Travis as the next best thing to an older brother, but by the light of the Christmas tree, Noah finally sees Travis’s true feelings. And in that moment, everything changes.

When faced with opposition and a Christmas nothing like they imagined, will their hopes for the future be enough to carry them through?

My View:

Some holiday stories expire on 26 December each year. Some stories transcend the “holiday story” title and are perfect for a sweet read anytime of year. His Needs by Chris T Bethke falls squarely in the latter category. While Travis and Noah’s story is set around the fall and winter holidays, it is not a Christmas story. It is a beautiful Best Friend’s Brother story with a hurt comfort twist.

There are many things to love about His Needs. First of all are, of course, the characters themselves. Your heart goes out to Travis who doesn’t think he deserves to be loved the way he wants to be. You can’t help but fall in love with the friendly, loyal, and outgoing Noah.

There are many individual scenes to enjoy — The moment Noah discovers Travis’ feelings is probably my favorite scene of the book. But put together, they make for a story I couldn’t put down and one I will happily revisit again.

His Needs is sweet and loving and you just know that Travis and Noah are going to make it. They face adversity, but they face it together.

While each story in the Nicky and Noah mysteries series can be read as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading all three stories in order. You get to know more about our main characters, and some of the supporting ones, that way. The Nicky and Noah Mysteries series are perfect for fans of the Cozy Mystery sub-genre. They mix tongue-in-cheek humor, over-the-top characters, a wee bit of political commentary, and suspense into a sweet little mystery solved by Nicky and Noah, theatre professors for whom all the world’s a stage. These thespians put their skills to work on a cruise where their fellow professors are being knocked off one by one. Drama Cruise has a little more explicit sex than the first two books in the series, which actually disappointed me a bit. I liked the “don’t ask” (and similar) version of fade to black that Cosentino utilized in the first installments. Though Cosentino’s dry humor still comes through on every page. We also get to see Nicky and Noah face adversity, well adversity of the non-murder variety. I would be happy to see Nicky and Noah back for more hijinx. on Goodreads
