After trading the barracks for a fixer-upper rental, navy SEAL Zack Nelson wants peace, not a roommate—especially not Pike, who sees things about Zack he most wants to hide. Pike’s flirting puts virgin Zack on edge. And the questions Pike’s arrival would spark from Zack’s teammates about his own sexuality? Nope. Not going there. But Zack can’t refuse.
Pike Reynolds knows there won’t be a warm welcome in his new home. What can he say? He’s an acquired taste. But he needs this chance to get his life together. Also, teasing the uptight SEAL will be hella fun. Still, Pike has to tread carefully; he’s had his fill of tourists in the past, and he can’t risk his heart on another, not even one as hot, as built—and, okay, yeah, as adorable—as Zack.
Living with Pike crumbles Zack’s restraint and fuels his curiosity. He discovers how well they fit together in bed…in the shower…in the hallway… He needs Pike more than he could have imagined, yet he doesn’t know how to be the man Pike deserves.
Off Base has a huge military vibe, you can probably guess from the cover and the title, as one of our MC’s is a SEAL – a career that Zack has always wanted, worked hard to get and lives for now that he has it.
It’s worth noting this book is full of homophobia and I felt it kind of ground me down a bit by the end. Zack is in the closet – way, way, way back there in the closet and he has no intention of coming out EVER. There are men he works alongside that are constantly making gay slurs, constantly calling him derogatory names and one of them is bullying and blackmailing him over something that happened in the showers. Zack is stressed, scared and underneath it all quietly volatile. He also comes from an ultra-conservative and strictly religious family where is his mother spends her life looking for a nice wife for him at church and his father carries round a bible.
Pike is the complete opposite of Zack in nearly every way. This guy has never even seen a closet never mind been in one and he refuses point blank to step into one for anyone no matter how much he likes them – and he really, really likes Zack. Fate intervenes and they find themselves as housemates and suddenly there is tension and heat and getting to know each other inside out! This pair were on fire together but only behind closed doors and only when there was nobody else about to see.
There is a HEA of course but they have to wade through some pretty awful sewage to get there. It was kind of exhausting by the end – I think it needed slightly more on the happy after what Zack went through with his family but overall Off Base was a solid start to a new series.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
