To date, I’ve published four stories in The Men of Halfway House series. I do my best to make each story different, while staying true to the series theme and overall “feeling.” That way, every journey is different yet still retains a similar vibe – if that makes sense. And yet, I still feel that odd twist in my gut as I send the fifth book (Drayton & Vann’s story) to my editor. So I asked an author friend of mine, “Does this anxiety ever go away?” She laughed and responded, “Nope.”
I’m always learning, reading books on editing, grammar, writing, what to do and what not to do. And I often want to yank my hair out when one tells me to do something the other is telling me not to. The art of writing is not easy. Compound that with pigheaded characters who step in and take over, and it can get messy. Mix in a little apprehension when you’re required to be on social media, and you’ve got a nice little anxiety cocktail working every muscle.
When it comes time for me to write, I set all that aside and focus on the story. I close my eyes and see and hear my characters. Yes, they speak to me, some are far more demanding than others. They are so vivid in my mind and I want to make sure I capture that same spirit in their words. Because, ultimately, it’s their story. And I think part of my anxiety stems from hoping I’ve done their story justice.
My upcoming release is Drayton & Vann’s book. And it’s very different from the other titles in the series. I believe it’s the most…I guess “hopeful” of the bunch. I’m having a tough time describing this one. It’s a story of soulmates who finally reconnect after ten years apart.
In the end, there’s only so much I can stress about, especially if it’s something I have no control over. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself. Bottom line is…their story is written. The only thing that keeps me at peace is knowing I did the best I could in trying to capture it and hope readers join Drayton and Vann in their journey when it releases in spring.
