From the Publisher:
Liam Lansing is heir to a prominent family of bio-modified vampires. That is, until he chooses the wrong lover and is cast down to the Gutter to scrape for his life.
Daniel Harding is heir to Cybernetix and a prince of the corporate Sky. That is, until his ideology drives his father to put a price on his head, forcing him into the Gutter.
But Daniel and Liam won’t vanish meekly into the smog. Together, they plan to rip open the hidden corruption that runs the Sky—for vengeance, for justice, and for hope. They strike against the corporations in a daring raid. When everything goes wrong, Daniel must betray his core beliefs to save the man he loves and protect his dangerous secret. Only through courage in the face of death—or worse—might he and Liam change the world they live in and create something new under the sun.
Something New Under the Sun is the second book in the Falling Sky series by L.A. Witt and my 3rd attempt at reading Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk tends to focus on a dystopic society with high technology and lots problems. In my (admittedly limited) experience they also are chalked full of social commentary. The Falling Sky series is no different.
Some background: Liam is a vampire (which is a voluntary mod in this world) and was in love with Daniel, a human. Daniel is the oldest son of one of the most powerful men in the “Sky” and a leader in the anti-mod movement. The Sky is the nearly Utopic society of the rich and powerful where getting “mods” (cybernetic enhancements) show your wealth and power. Liam’s powerful family has cast him out because of his love for Daniel and he has spent the last 5 years in the “Gutter”, which is where everyone and everything that does not fit in the picture perfect “Sky” is cast. In the first book of the series, Liam is hired to kill Daniel by Daniel’s powerful father. In this book, Liam and Daniel prepare to take down Daniel’s father and everything he stands for.
Something New Under the Sun is a fast past sci-fi thriller with erotic romance undertones. Throw in a few of those great sensual scenes Ms. Witt is famous for and you have a well rounded story. Liam and Daniel are written to be believable as people and as a couple. By the end you are are rooting for them to get their Happily Ever After, even when it looks like they won’t.
I would like to thank Riptide and NetGalley for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
