Title: Five Ways a Boy Can Break Your Heart
Author: Cate Ashwood and Skylar Cates
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
My Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
From the Publisher:
When Trey and Liam meet in boarding school, they couldn’t be more different. Liam is a classical violinist with a scholarship, and Trey is a punk rocker with famous parents. Despite their conflicting backgrounds, they hit it off and bond over their love of music. But after spending every waking hour together, Liam is devastated when Trey leaves school without an explanation. Worse yet, Trey capitalizes on a song they wrote together.
Seven years later, they bump into each other at a charity benefit in New York. Old sparks fly, but Liam hasn’t quite recovered from the pain Trey caused. Liam doesn’t know if any explanation Trey can offer will be enough, or if he can find it in his heart to forgive the only man he’s ever really loved.
Trey has everything a boy could want. His family is wealthy and buys him everything he needs even if they don’t spend any time with him and send him off to boarding school. The greatest thing in his life is his best friend Liam and his love of music.
Liam is also at boarding school but works for everything he needs. His parents are not wealthy and he is on a scholarship but nothing matters except his love of music and the secret love he carries around for his best friend Trey.
As the end of term approaches they are putting the finishing touches to a song they are writing together. A song that secretly describes how Liam feels about Trey but will he will never have the guts to tell him. Liam is not looking forward to the summer break as it means he won’t see Trey for weeks but before the break happens disaster strikes and changes everything.
Trey is pulled from school by his parents and taken home. He is too embarrassed to tell Liam the real reason so makes light of it and breaks the poor boys heart with what he says.
Seven years later and Trey needs to apologise for his out of control behaviour to his loving fans once again and ends up having to perform at a charity ball. Liam is also very successful in the music industry and at the same ball will playing in the orchestra. For the first time since that awful day in the dorm when Try broke Liams heart the two men come face to face.
After his performance Liam is so shaken that he gets very drunk very quickly and Trey ends up having to escort the man home. In the morning with an horrendous hangover Liam doesn’t know what to make of the fact that Trey is still in his apartment and seems uncharacteristically shy and nervous.
What remains to be seen is whether these two men can get over all the hurt, lies and betrayal that has been left in their wake of the last seven years. Whether Liam can even consider opening his heart to the man who shattered it and whether Trey can finally tell Liam the truth and stop running from demons.
