Will Lafferty and Kenny Scalia are both having sort of a day. Will gets fired for letting fifth graders read Harry Potter, and Kenny finds his boyfriend and his sex toys in bed with a complete stranger. When Will knocks over Kenny’s trash can—and strews Kenny’s personal business all over the street—it feels like the perfect craptastic climax to the sewage of suckage that has rained down on them both.
But ever-friendly, ever-kind Will asks snarky Kenny out for a beer—God knows they both need one—and two amazing things occur: Kenny discovers talking to Will might be the best form of intercourse ever, and Will discovers he’s gay.
Their unlikely friendship seems like the perfect platonic match until Will reveals how very much more he’s been feeling for Kenny almost since the beginning. But Kenny’s worried. Will’s newfound sexuality is bright and glittery and shiny, but what happens when that wears off? Is Will’s infatuation with Kenny strong enough to stay real?
“Sweet” is the first word that comes to mind after reading Amy Lane’s Shiny! And I don’t mean cotton candy’s sort of sickening sweet; instead, Shiny! is sweet like your favorite cake that your grandmother baked when you were a child. Remember how wonderful it was to taste that delicious, warm sweetness followed by a cup of cold milk, and served with a side order of your grandmother’s comforting hugs? Well, Shiny! leaves you with that same loving, heartwarming feeling. Will and Kenny are two of Lane’s most adorable characters – they are best friends, a little hesitant and shy to make the leap from friends to something more, and they both push past their insecurities and fears to have a bright, shiny future together.
I love that quite a bit of the story is devoted to Will and Kenny becoming very best friends. They have the same interests, love having simple fun like flying a kite at the beach together, cook meals together, talk and laugh for hours, and slowly fall in love. And when they do finally get together, the sex is amazing! Amy Lane can write a sex scene that’s sexy, passionate, tender, loving, and sizzling all at the same time. Best of all, Lane did not employ the usual trope of the more experienced partner sexually dominating the virgin – Shy, a bit dorky Will emerges from his cocoon as a sexy, loving, very equal sexual partner with Kenny. Also special is how Kenny grew past his self deprecating past behavior to see that he doesn’t want a false, insincere man, but that he wants Will, who is “warm and real.”
I cannot recommend highly enough that you read Amy Lane’s Shiny! Buy the book, turn off your phone, tell your kids to go away and play video games, ignore your spouse for a few hours, and give yourself the gift of reading this absolutely warm, funny, loving book from cover to cover. I just finished it, and I already want to read it again!
