The Dark Collector by Vanessa North ~ Review by Optimist ♰King’s Wench♰

This author, Vanessa North, is new to me (at the time of this writing) and I must say I was skeptical of all the hype. I was wrong. The hype is well deserved.

From the Publisher

Jeffrey Kuyper was a once-in-a-generation talent and I was his muse.

Jeffrey’s death shocked the art world and upended my life. His last portrait is an intimate reminder of our final weeks together. Now it’s up for auction and I want it more than anything. When a cold-mannered man in a dark suit outbids me, I’ll agree to anything to buy it from him–even a weekend in his bed.

My View

It’s unexpectedly emotional underneath a cocoon of cathartic sex. Yap, I said cathartic sex! There are a few instances where the sex is pivotal to the plot. This is one of those times. The dark collector, as he’s known, is lancing the wounds of grief, loneliness and loss left by Jeffrey’s untimely death with sex, domination, friendship and comfort.

All Oliver has ever known is being owned by Jeffrey and being his muse. For the past year he’s been on autopilot, just existing until the day of the auction. The day the dark collector steps into his life and asks Oliver to be his in exchange for Jeffrey’s last painting of him. A painting that means so much to Oliver that he’s willing to barter himself for it.

“You spend the weekend in my home. You do anything I ask. You do everything I ask. For one weekend—you’ll be to me what you were to him.”

An exchange. That’s all it’s supposed to be, a transaction. But, something happens during this weekend that neither expected. A connection is formed. A relationship different from what Oliver had with Jeffrey yet similar. Could this be more than just a weekend? Could the dark collector a.k.a. Henry be his future?

“Henry, who always writes his own thank you cards. Henry who saw me wild and sad and gave me back to myself.”

The characters are just well developed enough to leave you wanting more. The writing is spectacular. I was so engrossed in this that I read it all in one sitting. The BDSM aspects I would classify as mild to moderate. The Dark Collector is a true gem and I’ll look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

  1. I’m not really a fan of BDSM but I never really say “No” to any book without giving it a try. I love the quotes you pulled from the book and your review really piqued my interest.

    • Oh H.B. I have work to do to convert you to the other side, I see. lol

      I do love a challenge though. 🙂
