I couldn’t resist reading JR Shelley’s gay porn star finds true love story when I read the publisher’s blurb, and the beautiful cover art sealed the deal …
Author: JR Shelley
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
My Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
From the Publisher:
For most people, a life full of sex and debauchery sounds like a dream, but for gay porn star Logan Williams, who lives it, it’s nothing but a nightmare. Left disillusioned and empty by “living the dream,” Logan travels to an exclusive beachside resort to recharge and reevaluate his life. He expects to do this in solitude—instead, he finds RJ Spencer, and their immediate connection fills all of Logan’s empty spaces. But when the vacation ends, so does the fantasy life Logan created for himself and RJ, and he doesn’t think he can return to his empty life without RJ at his side.
The “gay porn star finds true love” trope is one that I almost always enjoy, so I am pleased to have opportunity to read JR Shelley’s Forever Fantasy. Logan is a gay porn star in his early thirties who feels trapped within the profession, and who is almost numb when engaging in meaningless sex both on and off camera. He fantasizes about his dream lover with whom he is able to make love, and have a happy life together forever. He goes to a gay beach resort to rest and rethink his life choices, and meets RJ, a psychiatrist who recognizes Logan as a porn star from research he did about the subject in graduate school. They strike up a friendship, and RJ quickly begins to try to help Logan to feel the closeness of another person, and to recognize his own self-worth. They begin a brief, intense affair and fall in love. After they both leave their vacation paradise for home, Logan is a broken man who is ultimately saved only by RJ’s love.
As I’ve already stated, I like this trope, largely because it capitalizes on the basic theme of a person who feels they have no options getting a second chance to write the story of their own life. I think Shelley did a particularly good job with Logan’s character – he is beautiful, vulnerable, sweet, and broken. It’s almost pitiful how he longs for a real connection with his fantasy lover, and he basks in even the simplest genuine touch from RJ like it is sunshine. However, I was less taken with RJ’s character. He immediately gets to work to “fix” Logan, and despite his early assurances that their relationship will be based solely on touch and connecting as human beings, their relationship quickly becomes a sexual one. Unlike Logan, RJ has no discernable character flaws, and I was somewhat bothered by the unevenness of their relationship throughout the story.
Overall, JR Shelley’s Forever Fantasy is a sweet “second chance” at life and love story with a satisfying happily ever after. I enjoyed the story, and recommend it for the next time you want read and daydream about a lovely fantasy becoming reality.
I would like to thank Dreamspinner Press for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
