Welcome to Prism Book Alliance! Tell us a bit about yourself …
Hello! Well, my name is Raine O’Tierney—I’ve been writing for over twenty years, writing M/M for the last 10. I’m a proud nerd, a library lady, super passionate about everything(!), I love dachshunds, I’m terrified of the impending zombie apocalypse, I would eat sushi every single day of my life, and I think the best thing we can do in life is support each other creatively. Also, I’m slightly obsessed with hats at the moment.
I checked out your website, and you seem like you are a truly positive, happy person. Do you really think every day is “the best day ever?” Are you the human version of Spongebob Squarepants?
THANK YOU!! YES! I almost always say that it’s the best day ever, usually when something small has delighted me. Like the day my boss brought pens back from her trip to Hawaii, or the day we got a library fish (McFannyWiggle) for the department, or when I ordered ONE McGriddles and got TWO McGriddles in the bag. BEST. DAY. EVER!
As to the question of Spongebob Squarepants, quite possibly! I am voiced by Tom Kenny, after all.
Share with me your love of the exclamation point! (I’m a kindred spirit of sorts … I have an unnatural affection for “…”)
I TRULY BELIEVE THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO CONVEY EXCITEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are a fairly new published m/m author – Why did you choose to write m/m romance as opposed to more traditional m/f romance?
I blame yaoi, it was my gateway drug. I started reading it in ’04 and after that…m/f just lost its appeal! I’ve been writing my own sweet m/m rom ever since.
I recently read your Valentine’s Day novella Under the Table and Into His Heart. Such a lovely, sweet romance! What was your inspiration for the fun and unique premise of the story?
Oh my goodness, you are making my blush-explode! (I blush very easily!) Thank you so much for your kindness. Again, I’ll blame yaoi—the host club concept is big in Japan and I thought to myself a couple of years ago, “What if I wrote an Americanized version of a host club?” so I did all these little storylets revolving around Miss Rye and Under the Table. Then when Dreamspinner said, “We’re taking Valentine’s Day stories! Who’s got one?” I thought, “Huh, I could do that with the Under the Table boys!”
For anyone who enjoyed Under the Table I’m actually half-way through a novel about the Under the Table host club and its deliciously sexy hosts which I hope will spark other novels as well.
Your latest novella, Sweet Giordan, Please Remember is with Dreamspinner Press. Tell us about it …
Sweet Giordan is truly a novella ten years in the making. The characters in this story were developed as side-charas for the first M/M novel I ever wrote (what will become book #2 in the Hearts in Reverie Series, hopefully this year!) and I just talked about them, for years, like they were real people. And about five years ago, I put Giordan’s story on paper, and then promptly hid it away from everyone because, why would anyone want to read it? <- Self doubt! My husband Siôn was the one who prodded me into finally trying to publish.
The concept for Sweet Giordan, Please Remember is so unique and lovely — how did you develop it? Any special inspiration?
(THANK YOU!) I so wanted Shane and Giordan to have an HEA, despite the unfair challenges life threw at them. There were so many times that Siôn and I just wanted to say, “How about we don’t do the coma? Or the homelessness? Or the years apart?” It hurt my heart to write them hurting even for a second, but ultimately I wanted to show that you CAN have a love that doesn’t fade, despite time and distance.
I think your portrayal of Giordan’s feelings of confusion and of being “lost” are particularly emotionally gripping. You really seem to depict amnesia is it might truly be experienced, rather than the romanticized version that many books and movies utilize. Did you do any special research regarding the victims of amnesia?
I studied amnesia in school—so I had a bit of an understanding, but for Giordan, I just imagined how Hollywood portrays it and decided to get as far away from that concept as possible. (LOL!) I laid in bed and tried to imagine what I would do if all I had left was my name and my art, and I realized, I’d cling to what I had—so with Giordan, he rediscovered himself through his art.
I just LOVE Maman … I want a Maman! She’s such a delightful, fierce woman! Did you model her after any person or people in your own life experience?
I don’t think Sweet Giordan would exist if not for Chloe Devereaux, Giordan’s “Maman”! The characters for this story were always in my head, of course, but she was what made the story really work—one day I imagined Shane’s mother as a woman that would sass her way through any situation, that would be wise and funny and giving…someone with true grace in her heart. I wanted to write a character that aspired to be. If I could be half the woman Chloe is, I’d be very pleased indeed!
Sweet Giordan, Please Remember is ultimately a powerful and timeless love story with a few quite intimate and sexy encounters. In a genre that tends to lean a bit toward often including sexually explicit details in most books, how did you decide specifically how to portray Giordan and Shane’s sexual relationship (both in memories and their reunion)?
I love this question! When I’m writing, I think in colors. I can’t paint worth a darn, so I just paint with words and to me, the gentle, intimate, beautiful (but less explicit) sex fit the whole “painting” of Sweet Giordan. Does that make sense or do I sound crazypants? LOL. I guess I wrote the sex how I imagine Giordan would paint the sex!
The cover for Sweet Giordan, Please Remember is amazing! How did you go about choosing the cover art?
Christine Griffin is the most amazing person on the planet. She went into my brain and my heart and scooped out all my feelings about this story and made a cover. One go. It’s absolutely perfect! I owe her so much.
Now for some fun! Let’s play This OR That …

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAINE O’TIERNEY!!
From the Publisher:
Giordan Stone is lucky, all things considered. Sure, he spent five years in a coma only to wake with a right leg that’s practically useless and no memories other than his name. But now he’s under the care of sassy southern surrogate mother, Chloe Devereaux, spending his days painting and healing. Giordan wants for nothing at all… until he looks out the window one morning and sees Chloe’s gorgeous son, Shane, standing there. Something very familiar stirs in Giordan.
When he sketches, Giordan is able to go into an “art trance” where pieces of disjointed memory come back to him without time or place. More and more of these flashes are of Shane Devereaux and the intense, intimate experiences they shared together. Even though Shane keeps his distance now, Giordan is convinced his flashes are real. But he doesn’t have the whole story. Giordan is determined to fill in his memory blanks and convince Shane his feelings are genuine.
About the Author
Raine O’Tierney is an always-writing, boundlessly enthusiastic, exclamation point addict! (!!!) She is known for declaring every day “the best day EVER!” and everything her “all-time FAVORITE!” Despite this (obnoxious?) exuberance, she still somehow manages to have a wonderfully encouraging husband (who also writes M/M rom!) and an amazing group of friends and colleagues who continue to support (read: put up with) her. Raine spends her days working as a library lady, fighting the good fight for intellectual freedom.
Raine tumbled headlong into the world of M/M romance after discovering yaoi back in 2004. A new passion was immediately born and her writing life became dedicated to men who love men! Raine frequently changes genres, but she always tries to imbue her stories with what she calls “The Sweetness” of which there are five Fs (first loves, first times, fidelity, forever-type endings, and… friskiness?).
After twenty-plus years of writing and dreaming, a decade spent working on M/M, and a year of being a lionheart, Raine is so pleased to join the Dreamspinner Press Family!
