A Matter of Time Story
Life has never been easy for Duncan Stiel. His childhood was the stuff of nightmares, and his day job as an undercover police officer forces him to hide his true self and occasionally lands him in the hospital. So when he finally meets the perfect man, it comes as no surprise that everything falls apart around him. What Duncan doesn’t expect is that the hardest hurdle to get over before he can make a life with Aaron Sutter is the one inside himself.
Everyone thinks Aaron has it all—looks, money, fame, and success beyond measure. Everyone, that is, except Aaron. At the end of the day, the cameras stop flashing, friends go back to their own lives, company business is handled, and Aaron is always alone. The moment he meets Duncan Stiel, Aaron knows he’ll do anything to hold onto the larger-than-life detective. But when he realizes money won’t buy him the ultimate happiness, Aaron needs to find the strength to give Duncan something much more important—his heart.
Parting Shot is the answer to all the AMoT faithful who were screaming for Aaron Sutter to get his own happily ever after. His adversary… err love interest is another ex from the Calmes-verse that you might remember – Duncan Stiel, who was first heard from as Nathan Qells ex in Acrobat. He also came riding to Sam and Jory’s rescue in But For You and was later set up on a blind date with Aaron Sutter. So you caught up now? good.
When I first read this story, I had this to say:
I Love this series. This was a great follow-up to the Sam and Jory saga. It focuses on Aaron and Duncan (introduced in But For You). You see another side to Aaron, through Duncan’s eyes, and get to see him get his HEA. You see Sam briefly and hear of Jory a few times, but it is very much focused on Aaron and Duncan. There is a little bit of insta-love, but it was a fun read. I stayed up way too late because I just didn’t want to stop reading it (eventually I did have to succumb to sleep). Oh and those who are NOT a fan of Calmes’ uber-Alphas will be happy.
Parting Shot picks up shortly after the end of But For You. Duncan in doing his undercover thing in NYC and missing Aaron. Aaron is doing his corporate mogul thing in Chicago and missing Duncan. They are a twisted up match made in closeted heaven… or are they. Neither are the quintessential Calmes-twink, nor are either of them the uber-alpha that she is famous for. They are both average (okay somewhat more than average) tops and deeply in lust with the other. They both want to be the one to take care of the other one. They both are hot as hell.
If you are looking for a deep and meaningful plot, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a couple you can love, this great one for you. The thinness of the plot works in the format’s favor. Audiobooks are not the best thing for heavily plot-driven stories, because there are times you may tune out and back in 5 minutes later. If you cannot easily catch back up, you will find yourself repeating sections many times over.
I adore this narrator. I have previously listened to his renditions of Rhys Ford’s Sinner’s Gin and Whiskey & Wry. His voice in best described as liquid sex. He uses only small inflections to differentiate the voices of the different characters. In short, he brings the story to life.
Tristan James is the forth different narrator in the A Matter of Time series on audio. However, since Parting shot focuses on Aaron and Duncan, rather than Sam and Jory, and is told from Duncan’s point of view, changing narrators is expected.
I would like to thank Dreamspinner Press for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
