Hunter rubbed his head against Ari’s. We’ll fight them off, but I have to know you’re safe. Please. He released a faint whine, something Hunter would never have done in the presence of an enemy had it not been for Ari. Hunter would never show his weakness. It only went to prove how his love for Ari couldn’t be denied any more than the call of their ancestors.
Boone backed toward them, his feral growl aimed at Koschei and his pack members. We’ll protect you until you can get away.
They formed a protective circle around Ari as he changed. The pain coursing through his human body was agonizing. He let out a cry as he lay there, feeling dizzy and sick to his stomach. His ankle burned, and his body was covered in wounds and scratches, some of them starting to heal. He shivered violently but couldn’t help his smile when Hunter’s concerned whimpers met his ear.
Hunter’s warm, furry head nuzzled him before he gently nudged Ari. Trip lay down beside him, and with teeth gritted, Ari rolled onto his side. He threw his leg and arm around Trip, grabbed a fistful of Trip’s fur with his good hand, and pulled himself on as best he could. When he was sure he wouldn’t fall off, he gave Trip the okay. Trip stood, and Ari looked down at Hunter, tears in his eyes.
“I’ll be waiting for you.”
Hunter nodded, and Trip broke into a run, the rest of the clan attacking Koschei and his pack members, doing everything in their power to keep them from going after Ari and Trip.
The wind was cold against his skin, and Ari shivered. He closed his eyes and snuggled against Trip’s warm fur, holding on tight and doing his best to remain conscious. As Trip sped through Vucari Woods, Ari prayed to the Goddess above that Hunter and the others would return safely.
