Reporter Ian Evers, obsessed with magical creatures since childhood, never experiences satisfying proof that the magical realm actually exists until he falls into an entrapment spell set by a handsome but dangerous elf. Barely escaping with his soul intact, Ian is able to undo the hex, but he can’t escape the very real infatuation he’s developed for the fierce, alluring elf.

Ezekiel Stormshadow is a svarta, a dark elf who serves the Queen of the dark realm. The realm of darkness needs the power of light to survive, and while hunting the last few magical beings on earth, Ezekiel discovers Ian, a light elf who’s unaware of his true nature and ripe for the plucking. Their brief encounter awakens a great hunger in Ezekiel, and he’s determined to feast on the light elf’s power and body before the queen intervenes and claims Ian for herself.

Ian knows only he can save Ezekiel from the grasp of the dark queen. Driven apart by the ancient imbalance between the dark and light realms, an evil queen starved for power, and their fear of each other, Ian and Ezekiel are relentlessly drawn together even though their union might destroy them both.

My View:

I found this world fascinating. The concept of Light and Dark elves warring needlessly due to corruption was wonderful. The story had so many great visuals and the action kept me on the edge of my seat. I think this world was well done.

However, I was left feeling confused about most of the rationale and most of the emotions in this one. This story was very much a “fated soulmates” romance, yet I wasn’t ever really convinced as to the nature of this fated mating. And I think that is due to the fact that the author did not really explain a great deal of HOW the world worked. There were bits and pieces of history given and the basic layout of the light and dark was given, but never the reasoning or the inner workings.

The word love was used to explain the bond between Ian and Zeke, but I never felt that love. I understood the connection, but I was never convinced of more than that pull of fate. There were so many times Ian just knew how to do things. He went for believing he was fully human to suddenly just knowing how to use his magic to get what he wanted and how to merge the light and dark. It was as if the author understood the underlying meaning and reasoning, but never relayed that to me as a reader.

For those of you who can just roll with it and not really need to understand everything, you will enjoy this one. Like I said it was action packed and the world was fabulous. For those readers like me, who need a bit more bridging between action and emotion, you will still enjoy this one, but it will leave you questioning the why of things and for me, it diminished my enjoyment of the story.
