After five years, Alex Stern and Rafe Hazelton have what seems to be the perfect marriage. Alex is entering his last years of residency and Rafe’s veterinary business is busier than ever. For Rafe, all that is missing is a child, but Alex, afraid of ending up to be a man like his father, isn’t as sure. He doesn’t want to make any mistakes.
When a new patient enters the hospital, Alex is drawn to the young, desperately ill single mother, who shares her fears for the future of her young son. Rafe worries about the toll on Alex becoming emotionally invested in a patient, yet he too can’t walk away once he meets the little boy, and together they vow to help in any way possible.
Families are not always born of blood— love is a gift no one can plan for. And sometimes from the darkest of tragedies, the brightest light will shine.
This is a 25k word novella in the Memories series.
Alex and Rafe weren’t my favorite of Felice Steven’s many couples. However, when she asked on Facebook about which couple needed a kid the most, they were the ones I thought of first. So, I am happy to see this little novella this holiday season. And dammit, you aren’t supposed to make me cry during the holidays!
The Greatest Gift takes place about five years after the events of One Step Further. Alex and Rafe has settled into couplehood (and marriage). Their best friends Micah and Josh are already fathers. Alex, however, keeps finding reasons to put off the decision. There is alway a reason why “not now”.
Then everything changes when he meets a patient who Alex just can’t turn his back on. Throughout our story we get to know Alex and Rafe better. We get to see what kind of dads they will be. We get to fall in love with a little boy while Alex and Rafe are doing the same. We break our hearts as that little boy loses his world. We rejoice as Rafe and Alex give him a new life.
There isn’t a question how this story is going to end up. The Greatest Gift is about the journey. It is about revisiting old friends and seeing that together they are more than you ever thought to hope for them. It is about the holiday spirit.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
