Forbes Mates: Book Two

Jamie Ryan was almost ready to accept he’d never find his destined mate. They’re uncommon to begin with, and same-sex versions are downright rare. Since his gay best friend found a destined mate, Jamie figured he was out of luck. Until end-of-semester stress forces him to go through the full-moon shift early. Stuck in wolf form, he runs into none other than his destined mate. Who’s human.

Chad Sutton has always had good instincts. They served him well as a detective and continued on when he went private. Those instincts tell him there’s something about the dog that comes up to him while running away from animal control that isn’t quite right. He works to put the pieces together, but is unsuccessful until his dog turns into a human before his eyes.

Jamie has no idea what the mate bite of a shifter will do to a human. He’s terrified to try—and possibly kill his mate. They hunt for answers while working together on one of Chad’s cases. It’s easy to see they belong together, but Jamie fears the gods gave him someone he can’t keep.

My View:

If you read Devotion by Grace R Duncan, you are likely looking forward to this installment in the Forbes Mates series.  In Patience, Jamie, who you either love or hate from Devotion, finally gets his man.

In that installment Duncan built shifter world.  She also gave us a sweet fated mates story.  However, in Devotion we didn’t get the meet cute.  We didn’t get to know either character without the other or see their love develop.  In Patience, we get all of that.

There really isn’t a lot of external conflict in this story.  Jamie is the Jamie we know from Devotion, but we also get to know him better.  We again have many pages of our main character thinking for his mate and putting words, emotions, and fears on said mate.  His human mate, in fact, is quite accepting of the situation.  Some might say too much so.

As a couple, you can’t really beat Jamie and Chad.  They are good for each other.  I loved their first meeting.  I enjoyed seeing Chad take care of Jamie.  I enjoyed getting to know Miles a bit better and am looking forward to his story (next I hope).  I liked the little bit of mystery though I felt it could have been better developed.  It felt almost shoehorned into the story in order to introduce Quincy.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing a little more development of the subplot with the prime alpha and the Italian wolves.   I can see a lot of conflict possible with the proper development of those subplots in the next installment.

Overall, I enjoyed this installment more than I did the first.  If you loved the first, you would likely love this one.  If you haven’t read the first, you can still enjoy this one, but you might miss out on a bit of world building.  Duncan summarizes the relationship points fairly well.
