Spring – Growth and Grass ~ Outside the Margins with Posy Roberts

Join Prism Book Alliance® as Posy Roberts goes Outside the Margins today.

The snow in Minnesota is nearly melted away and the winter coats can be hung up, at least until we get another blast of cold come through. We always get a bad storm or two in March and April, and because the weather is so much warmer, we get a lot of snow. Not Buffalo, NY snow, but a few feet in a matter of hours is not unheard of.

With the warming air, I get the bug to garden, but since nothing can really get into the ground until the end of May, I have to satisfy my craving by planting seedlings or doing what I’ve done every spring since college: plant grass seed!

Fresh green grass

It might sound crazy to plant grass inside, but it brings spring indoors in a way little else does. And when you cut it with a scissors, it makes the entire house smell of summer days.

If you can’t tell, I’m starving to be connected with nature again. I’m hoping to have a productive garden this year. I want to grow heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, and a lot of varieties of lettuce. Who knows what the kid and hubby will want to grow yet?

Spring is my favorite season of the entire year. I love hearing the birds singing again. Once the snow is no longer muffling all sound, I hear neighborhood noises again, like kids playing and laughing. Plants grow, and there is green all around!

The people living on the commune, Kaleidoscope Gardens, in my Naked Organics series have been planning on planting a new crop in the spring, and it’s taken them all winter to prepare for it. They’re growing hops, which is a fascination crop. It grows vertically and supports need to be built so the plant can climb. As hops grows, it actually moves clockwise, searching out something to latch on to.

Here’s a time-lapse video of how hops grows.

It’s fascinating to me and a little bit mesmerizing. Doing all the research for this series has been fun and has made me really want to work hard on my garden this years. It’s been years since John and I have truly worked in the soil. We had a lovely raised garden in our first house, but after the kiddo was born nearly 14 years ago, we no longer had the time or energy to devote to it. Now our daughter is showing interest too. And I can’t wait to introduce her to composting. I love composting!

But we’ll start with grass this weekend then plant seeds for later transplanting.

What’s going on in your world this time of year? What do you love about spring? Do you have plans for your garden or flowerpots on your deck?

Off the grid. A refreshingly different romance.

Jude Garrity visits the farmers market every Saturday. As an environmental engineering student, he’s curious about living off the grid and sustainable agriculture.

And one particular farmer.

Hudson Oliva has worked hard to support his commune, where queer people live without fear of harm or retribution. When Jude asks pointed questions about living there, Hudson realizes he needs to be honest about his home. Few people know what the farm is actually about, but Jude is insistent.

Jude moves to Kaleidoscope Gardens, however his sexual hang-ups make it hard to adjust. He’s an uptight virgin living among people who have sex freely and with multiple partners. When Jude finally loosens up, Hudson is flooded with emotions. Falling for Jude wasn’t part of Hudson’s life plan. But when vindictive rumors about the commune begin to spread, love might be all he has left.
