Take two guys, one small apartment with almost no air conditioning, and one sizzling Garden State. When you add some neighbors, a few blackouts, and a lot of sunscreen things get complicated. Can these roommates become more than friends without actually melting their living situation or anything else?

My View:

Carter and Austin are roommates, sharing one bedroom in a one bedroom apartment. They’re both recent college grads, working their first ‘serious’ jobs. They also both seem confident and at ease with who they are, and with each other. This includes Carter and his bisexuality, something he’s learning to define for himself and what it means in his life. He’s not suffering a lot of angst about it, he’s living it as a part of who he is.

The same goes for Austin. He’s gay. He knows what he wants, what he deserves from life, and voices those things without much hesitation, including where Carter is concerned. That is, of course, once Carter serves the first volley across the net of attraction.

Their flirting is that steamy, quiet, direct type, each man saying mostly what he’s thinking and feeling. Filters are set aside and it results in two adults in their early 20s behaving as such.

On the flip side, some of their dialogue is awkward – too formal, too wordy – and they sound older than most young 20-somethings. There are also some repeated words and phrases within a single paragraph on several occasions which would have been easy to spot during editing. Aside from these things, and some errant commas, this story and these characters worked for me.

This is sweet, relatable, and sexy in a wonderfully lazy summer way.
