From Louisiana swamp rat to revivalist huckster to skilled con artist, Matthias Krall clawed his way out of poverty using his natural gifts of grift and manipulation to become the leader of an exclusive retreat center. Exploiting the guise of spiritual guru, Matthias seduces the rich and powerful into turning over their lives and fortunes to his control. But wealth and a small cadre of loyal followers can’t protect Matthias from the betrayal he knows is imminent. Everyone wants what Matthias has, except for one man who wants to destroy it. Dylan Connelly is a reporter who’s determined to prove the charismatic recluse is not only a fraud but a murderer.
Irresistibly drawn to Dylan despite the warnings in his gut, Matthias lures Dylan to his island retreat, determined to destroy his enemy once and for all.
In this excerpt, Matthias is enjoying the challenge of trying to hypnotize the suspicious and resentful Dylan:
Dylan’s blush refreshed, and nervous twitching took over the fingers of his other hand. He’d obviously revealed much more than he’d intended. He was desperate to escape, but again he made no attempt to free his hand. Time to smooth ruffled feathers and use Dylan’s exposed emotions to delve deeper.
“Shall we call a truce and move on?” Matthias asked.
“Sure. I suppose the meditation thing is shot.”
“On the contrary, now is a perfect time, and I’ve cleared my afternoon for you. If you’re willing, I suggest we continue.”
“After an intense conversation that releases long-held emotions, the mind is more receptive to new perspectives and fresh thoughts.”
Dylan looked longingly at the door, then leaned back. “So glad we cleared the air,” he muttered under his breath.
“Let’s look at that,” Matthias said.
“Your lingering resentment. Surely you’ve had many intimate relationships over the years?”
“Not that many.”
“And yet you cling to this one negative incident that happened ten years ago.”
“Cling isn’t exactly the word I’d use.”
“Take a deep breath, and on the exhale, release your anger.”
“I’m not angry. But I am wound up. I think I should go.”
“I think you should stay.”
They stared at each other. Dylan’s emotions bubbled up and over, eyes flashing. Matthias was at his calmest, totally focused and determined to win. He eased forward, reached out, and ran a finger along Dylan’s cheek.
“I want you to stay.”
Dylan swallowed hard enough to make his Adam’s apple bob. So far he hadn’t responded to Matthias’s touch, holding himself rigidly in check. Matthias thought of Dylan’s self-control in the shower. A master of self-denial.
We’ll see how long that lasts.
Matthias slid his hand behind Dylan’s neck and pulled him forward. Dylan didn’t resist. Matthias kissed him softly, giving him every chance to protest, hoping he wouldn’t. Dylan’s reserve gave way, and his tongue darted out, sliding into Matthias’s mouth. Matthias pressed harder, keeping a firm hold on Dylan’s neck, licking and biting at his lips.
Instantly his skin flamed again, and tension rolled through him in exquisite waves, unleashed by Dylan’s taste and heat. A few more moments and he wouldn’t be able to stop. He had to let this be Dylan’s decision. He ran his hand down Dylan’s chest and stomach and brought it to rest on Dylan’s swollen cock, drawing a gasp from the mouth he held prisoner.
He broke free from the kiss and stood, dragging his fingers through his hair. At least he didn’t have to fake his agitation. Dylan’s anger was a beautiful thing to behold.
“You’re doing it again?” Dylan demanded, cheeks red, lips moist from Matthias’s tongue. “Running away?”
“I can’t abuse my position. You might not think so, but you’re not entirely in control of what you’re doing.”
“Oh, yes I am.” Dylan sprang out of the chair and wavered a bit. “Head rush,” he said, reaching out for support. Matthias seized his forearms and held him steady.
