Finding his mate should have been Patrick Holland’s greatest day, instead it turned into a nightmare with one phone call. His mate didn’t want him. His heart broke, but at sixteen he was too young to do anything. The next ten years—ten long years— of Patrick’s life are spent at odds with his mate. Split by forces he can’t comprehend and a long line of misunderstandings, Patrick doubts he’ll ever get the man he’s both loved and hated.
Jake Richmond never expected to come home from Uni to find the youngest Holland brother was his mate. Knowing the news might uplift his still grieving father, Jake shares the news only to have his young mate threatened. Jake does the only thing he can think of, protect Patrick. The next ten years are nothing but torture for Jake as he watches his mate grow into a remarkable young man.
They say time heals all wounds, but how much time?
Adriana reviewed the eBook several years ago. You can check it out here.
With audio books I don’t usually comment on the story too much and instead focus on the narration. However, my opinion of the plot is SO different than Adriana’s I had to say something.
There were many times I wanted to stop listening but I stuck with it. Overall I’m glad I did, but there was SOOO much frustration than I can’t give it higher than three stars.
The plot elements here sounded exciting; age gap, friends-to-lovers and forbidden love. Jake comes home from college and lays eyes on Patrick, his best friend’s brother, and they realize they are mates. However, because Patrick is still sixteen years old they agree not to announce that they’re mates until Patrick turns 18. Having to wait two years until they’re together would’ve and could’ve been conflict enough, but instead Griffin throws in another obstacle and it was this that almost ruined the story for me.
Jake’s father turns out to be a homophobic asshole and when Jake announces Patrick is his mate his old man threatens to kill Patrick if Jake ever claims him. So Jake pushes Patrick away to save his life. Patrick doesn’t tell anyone about the threats, just goes along with his father. There are several problems with that, especially that Patrick is a member of a wolf shifter family and his father is the fucking alpha.
While I understand Jake’s reluctance to claim Patrick until the younger man comes of age, but after that they would be together and Jake could protect him. And he could tell Patrick’s family and they could protect him. Or they could go after Jake’s father and threaten him to leave them alone. I just could not buy this obstacle. It annoyed me for so much of the book that I wanted to wring Jake’s neck. I’m fine with not liking a main character but when I don’t buy the plot points it really lowers my enjoyment.
If it weren’t for Brandilyn’s promise that in the end Jake redeemed himself I probably would’ve given up. I did like seeing Jake and Patrick together but I’d gone through so much annoyance it was hard to get over that.
If it weren’t for the awesome narration of Dominic M. McCartney I might really have given up on the book. His sweet Aussie voice is perfect for these characters. He’s a narrator I could listen read from the dictionary.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
