What do you do when the body you wake up in isn’t yours?

Olly and Scott promised to be best friends forever. They grew up on the same street, went to the same school, and did everything together. But one hot summer night, teenage experimentation caused hurt feelings and confusion, and their friendship was destroyed.

Four years later they’re both eighteen years old and in their final term at school. Scott is a football star and Olly’s preparing for a main role in the school play. After a heated argument in the street—witnessed by their mysterious, elderly neighbour—they wake up the next morning stuck in each other’s bodies.

With no idea how to get back to normal, they have to co-operate in order to hide their secret. Spending time together rekindles their friendship, yet feelings run deeper for both of them. With the end of school fast approaching, the clock is ticking. Unless they discover how to change back, they could be stuck in the wrong bodies forever.

My View:

How I love a good YA story! Jay Northcote does a wonderful job of taking the Freaky Friday body-switch trope and turning it into something deeper and far more magical.

In this sweet, touching romance, estranged friends Olly and Scott wake up the day after an argument to find they’ve switched bodies. As this happens early on in the story, I was concerned that I hadn’t gotten enough background on the characters, who they were, and why there was such animosity between them. Slowly, however, the author spins their tale, both as individuals and as friends, until it becomes clear who each of these young men are as they live each other’s lives and work together to find a solution that will change them back.

The cleverly written plot brings these two characters together in a unique way, forcing them literally to walk in each other’s shoes as they gain clearer understanding of their counterpart and how to put past differences aside in an attempt to reach a common goal. The daily lives of these two young men are enjoyable to watch as they navigate unknown paths and acquire new skills, confidence, and empathies. Painful pasts, bittersweet memories, and current revelations are discovered and shared in touching scenes with frank, authentic dialogue. Secondary characters are also key, particularly family members who play crucial roles in the lives of the main characters and in the development of their relationship.

With its fun premise, well-crafted characters, and compelling storyline, Into You a satisfying read that celebrates the importance of embracing who we are as individuals while continually striving to understand and love others. I recommend this cute, magical tale for all fans of m/m romance, and I am looking forward to reading more of Jay Northcote’s books with great enthusiasm!
