North Pole City Tales: Book Five

As a beloved Rein Dear and Christmas elf for Mayor Kringle, Donner prides himself on his flawless reputation, good sense, and wise decisions. Donner never does anything until he’s thought it through properly. He’s certainly not one to get flustered, infuriated, or fall prey to romantic nonsense. At least not until the most unlikely of elves begins chipping away at Donner’s defenses.

Calder is a Dockalfar—a dark elf. He’s wicked, untrustworthy, and armed with lethal magic. At least that’s what everyone thinks. It’s easy for them to believe the worst and mistrust him before they’ve even spoken to him, but Calder is out to prove that he’s more than his Dockalfar blood, especially to a certain Rein Dear who has caught his eye. But it will take more than sweet words for Donner to admit what’s in his heart.

My View:

One thing I look forward to each December is the latest installment in Charlie Cochet’s North Pole City Tales series.  Her take on the entire Santa and North Pole mythos is unique and intriguing.  She makes you care about each and every character and sucks you into her world.  I always enjoy re-reading the series before reading the latest installment.

This year’s installment is named Disarming Donner.  If you can’t guess from the title, Donner is the Rein Dear of record this year.  He find his one true love, where he least expects it.  Like many of his Rein Dear brethren before him, he doesn’t expect love to come from where it does.  He fights himself until he just can’t fight any more.

Disarming Donner is an enemies to lovers/opposites attract type story set in the cold of the North Pole after the “big flight”.  Calder and Donner are opposites in almost every way… except the most important, they both want each other.  This tale also shows us that the outsides aren’t indicative of the insides and stereotypes are rarely right.

Of course there is a bit of a fight to get to their happily ever after, we also catch up with Vixen, Cupid, and Blitzen.  We get to watch Dasher work a bit more on the Frost King (I assume we will be getting their story at some point… yes that is a hint).  And we get join in on the festivities as Rudy and Jack prepare for their big day.
From a technical perspective, some of the world building has changed from the first story, Mending Noel, until now, but only for to better serve the story Cochet is trying to tell.
