An Interview with author Joe Cosentino on the making of the audiobook of his short holiday romance novella, A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, performed by Joel Leslie, and published by Dreamspinner Press
Welcome to a regular guest at Prism Book Alliance, Joe Cosentino.
Thank you, it’s great to be back in the prism. I feel so crystal-like, colorful, and chic.
Tell us about the holiday gift you’ve brought us today.
I’m excited to report that my short holiday novella, A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, is now an audiobook! For an hour and a half, and a small fee, readers can take a trip to the gorgeous and magical island of Capri, Italy!
Is that what prompted you to write the short story?
Yes, my spouse and I went on a two-week tour of Italy. Our favorite spot was that beautiful and romantic paradise.
What impressed you most about Capri?
Everything! While on the boat ride to the Marina Grande, the sight of the enormous cliffs sitting majestically on the water literally took our breath away. From the funiculare (cable car) we marveled at the stunning views of the island below and Mt. Vesuvius in the distance. At the Piazetta (main plaza) we boarded an island bus that zoomed around harrowing, tight corners like a car in a Fun House. We travelled to Via Krupp in the southern part of the island, and we walked through what Italians call “the villas of the rich and famous,” underscored by the sparkling turquoise sea below. We swam in gorgeous white sand beaches surrounded by artistic white stone formations like Marina Piccola. When we arrived at Mt. Solaro, our guide told us it was highest point on the Isle of Capri, five hundred and eighty-nine meters above sea level. As we looked out at the fog, the sun came up and the wind blew the vapors of fog upwards, crowning the clouds, and revealing stunning views of the Bay of Naples, the Amalfi Coast, and the mountains of Calabria in the distance. As we looked out over the turquoise water, white mountains, and azure sky, I felt like I was in heaven. However, the most magical of all was the Grotta Azzurra (the Blue Grotto). As our boat went through the tiny portal of the expansive cave, my breath was taken away by the water’s brilliant shades of iridescent sapphire and emerald from the sun’s reflection on the water in the cove. Capri also had the most amazing restaurants and shops on the water’s edge. And the people somehow all seemed beautiful and sensuous.
Did you start writing your story on the plane coming home?
I wrote the outline while in Capri! I decided my story would be about Bobby, a young, Italian American law student traveling to Capri during the winter holidays to meet his quaint Italian relatives, and falling in love with his handsome, muscular, sexy Italian third cousin, Paolo. Their relationship with highs and lows and some captivating surprises is the core of the short novella. Since I come from a long line of funny Italian Americans, I included a good deal of humor in the story as well with Paolo’s eccentric family.
What prompted you to do an audiobook version a year later?
Readers told me how much they loved the visual and sensory aspects of the story. They also found the characters to be bouncing off the pages. I think it would make a fantastic movie. While waiting for the movie gods to make that happen, I asked the staff at Dreamspinner Press if an audiobook version was a possibility.
How did you get award-winning narrator/producer Joel Leslie?
Joel had auditioned for and done my THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER TALES FROM FAIRYLAND audiobook to rave response. Like the reviewers and readers, I was captivated by Joel’s strong acting talent, diverse and endearing characters and accents, clever sense of humor, and strong connection to my writing. So I asked him if he would do the A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS audiobook, and I was thrilled when he and Dreamspinner Press agreed. Joel perfectly captures the Italian landscape, sights, sounds, scents, tastes, characters, moods, humor, romance, and adventure of Bobby, Paolo, and their families in this magnificent island. He plays each member of the Mascobello family so beautifully, you won’t believe all those character voices came out of one person. His recording equipment is also top notch. So the sound quality is amazing. I’m happy to report that Joel is also contracted to do the audiobook of my IN MY HEART/An Infatuation and A Shooting Star novel, which recently won a Rainbow Award Honorable Mention. Look for that audiobook to release this summer.
Thank you for joining us today. Any closing words?
Enjoy your mini trip to Capri, Italy. You won’t want to leave!
