Summary:

Driven from his family when his sexuality is exposed, Jonah discovers drama, passion and intrigue in a traveling carnival—and in the enigmatic owner, Rafe Grimstone. The preacher’s son and the lord who’s rejected his former life in England feel the heat of attraction from the moment they meet.

Open-hearted Jonah is willing to risk hellfire and damnation for brief moments of pleasure with Rafe, but the older man is frozen in a past he can’t escape no matter how far he runs. As Rafe struggles to choose between responsibilities of his present and his past, mysterious accidents assail the close-knit carnival community.

Will the perpetrator be revealed before the traveling show is ruined? And will Rafe finally reveal his true self to Jonah or continue to mask his identity like the changing images in a house of mirrors?

Story Review:

Though I don’t normally care for historicals I’ve enjoyed Bonnie Dee’s stories so I decided to take a chance on this one and a few others of their co-written historicals.

The setting here was unique—a traveling carnival. I enjoyed both characters—Jonah and Rafe—and bought their conflicting desires regarding their sexualities. Though having to be closeted was realistic for the setting there were times I wanted to smack them for at least not admitting their feelings for each other at least in privacy.

The sex and chemistry between these guys was amazing from the first hesitant encounter to them having anal sex for the first time. This wasn’t a super heavy read and I was captivated from the beginning.

A great tale of forbidden love.

Narration Review:

This was the first time listening to a book narrated by Gary Furlong and I was pleasantly surprised. He made Jonah and Rafe distinct for both their internal and external voices. His words and timbre fit perfectly for the time period.
