It’s hard to recover from a first love. Some people never do.
How hard would you fight to keep your best friend? Marc Lucas and Tomas Santos have been best friends forever, but now their friendship is in a crisis. When they were boys, betrayals ripped their world apart. They thought it was fixed, but some parts remained broken. Ever since he saved him from a humiliation at school, Marc has loved Tomas. The last thing he expects is for Tomas to love him back. To keep his best friend, Marc revisits an abusive past he’s tried to forget.
For Tomas, loving Marc has been anything but easy. His upbringing told him it was wrong, so why did it feel so right? Accepting who he is as an adult, Tomas decides he needs a committed relationship. To his deep sorrow, he can’t seem to find it with Marc.
When the two find themselves alone and in the grip of a hurricane, long-buried feelings emerge. Being “just friends” is no longer an option. They must risk it all on love.
Brandilyn reviewed the ebook here.
She enjoyed the book more than me but I think that’s because she read the previous books in the series. The book can be read as a stand alone but I think it helps knowing the other characters mentioned to get the full affect of the story.
Close to You is the story every reader of the Sunshine and Happiness series by Skylar Cates has likely been asking for since the first book. This is Tomas and Marc’s story.
They are childhood friends who are obviously fighting being much much more. This is a second chance romance years in the making. While the romance itself is somewhat quick in relation to the story in the book, it has taken so much longer and so many more frustrations to get to this point. It is a point worth all the waiting and hand wringing – both for Tomas and Marc and for the reader.
Cole to You is told with alternating present day and flashback sequences. We see Marc and Tomas grow together in one timeline while the are falling apart in the other. Finally we see those dynamics reverse so that Marc and Tomas can finally have the happily ever after they both crave and fear in equal measure.
There are smiles and tears. Love and heartbreak. Moments of loss and moments of acceptance. So many emotions in about 250 pages. So worth the wait.
My one complaint is that the “present day” sections are written in present tense. That takes some getting used to.
Tristan James did an amazing job here just as he always does. He narrated these guys perfectly. I simply move his voice.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
