Welcome to Andover… where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef-up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship—only it turns out to be for the town’s most heinous supervillain. On the upside, she gets to work with her longtime secret crush, Abby, who Jess thinks may have a secret of her own. Then there’s the budding attraction to her fellow intern, the mysterious “M,” who never seems to be in the same place as Abby. But what starts as a fun way to spite her superhero parents takes a sudden and dangerous turn when she uncovers a plot larger than heroes and villains altogether.
This book is totally FUN! It took me a little while to get into it at first, but once Jess started working her internship I was hooked. Ms. Lee writes with a simple and bright style that I am grateful for because there’s a lot going on here – powers, villains, friend drama, cultural family stuff, you name it. I loved the diversity in Andover.
And then there’s Bells, and the fact that he’s amazing, and the additional fact that I want as much of him as humanly possible, and the additional additional fact that he’s getting his own book next! This is a thing that we want. Trust me.
Oh, and also. I’ve never read a f/f romance before, so I thought Not Your Sidekick (as a YA title) might be a good place to start, and I wasn’t wrong. Abby is both cute and smart, and Jess’ uncertainty about their interactions seemed perfectly authentic for a high school student. I’m glad I chose this book as my introduction to that genre and I really enjoyed reading it overall.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
