Is beauty only skin deep?
Chemist Dr. Robert “Belle” Belleterre loves flowers, green trees, his best friend Judy, and “his baby:” the new face cream he developed to help put his father’s small cosmetics company on the map. Sadly he gets no help from his alcoholic, gambling-addicted father, who loses Belle in a poker game to Magnus Strong, the CEO of Beauty, Inc., the largest American cosmetics company—a man infamous for his scarred ugliness.
Belle finds himself uprooted from his home, living in a wildly crazy apartment in New York owned by Mr. Pennymaker, and completely unprepared for his mad attraction to the charismatic Strong. Feeling like a traitor, Belle fights his passion, only to see more and more of the goodness and humility hidden by Strong’s ugly face. But when Belle’s family starts manipulating his life again, the odds turn against happiness for beautiful Belle and his beloved beast.
Beauty Inc was definitely written in the style of a fairy tale. As long as you keep this in mind, and you like fairy tales, you should enjoy it! It was a fun book with unrealistic happenings, but the ending is so happy that you can forgive it.
I listened to this in audio and I’m not sure if it would have been better not in audio. I felt the narrator was ok, some characters had good, distinct voices – like Mr. Pennymaker, Belle, and Magnus – others all sounded the same. He attempted to do some accents but other than the British one, I felt they all fell flat.
Narration aside, I did like Belle and Magnus. I thought the emphasis put on how ugly Magnus was because of scars was sad. I know it was done so he was the beast but it made me up set. I was so glad that someone was able to see through it. Mr. Pennymaker was up to his old tricks and I like how he ties the stories in the series together.
In the end, it was an entertaining listen.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
