When Chris is unceremoniously dumped by his longtime girlfriend, his best friend Thomas picks up the pieces and remind there’s more to life than his lost relationship. In the process of letting go of a relationship that wasn’t what he thought, Chris slowly comes to realize that everything he’s ever wanted may have been right beneath his nose the whole time…
How I have struggled with this review, there was a lot a really liked about this, and some I really didn’t.
Friends to lovers is one of my favourite tropes, and this has it. I also have a massive weakness for love stories where the protagonists are living relatively normal lives, working in a shop – making ends meet not always sure of what direction they really want their lives to go.
Chris is a bartender and sometimes model, he is a little aimless, then the bottom drops out of his world when he’s dumped, and he finds out (via Facebook) that she’s been cheating on him for quite a while. Chris and Thomas had a thing before Chris was with his girlfriend, but remained friends and to lift Chris up Thomas invites him to stay.
Chris is shown as very attractive, while Thomas is a larger guy with Gothic tendencies, and the author introduces these, as with Chris’ bisexuality really well, and it’s the same deft touch with how they start to become involved. It really feels very natural.
However it’s the naturalness that made the book disappointing as well. There is a line I read somewhere that said ‘just because we are little people doesn’t mean that we live little lives’ . And at times this felt little, Chris lacking direction felt that he was settling for Thomas at times and I wanted to feel that there was passion here. It also felt quite abrupt in it’s ending.
Overall this was an interesting take on friends to lovers, and I will read more from C.A Blocke.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
