At 19, Beck Barretti is living two lives. To his family, he’s a young man trying to find his way after years of battling a mental illness that nearly cost him everything. But to the rest of the world he’s just another privileged kid with problems. The truth doesn’t even lie somewhere in between because Beck’s entire life is actually about keeping secrets.

From the people he loves.

From the ones he doesn’t.

From himself.

Spending a summer in Dare, Montana with family friends isn’t about starting fresh – it’s about escaping the crippling darkness that threatens to consume him.

Until one encounter that was supposed to mean nothing ends up changing everything…

Quinn Donovan had the life he’d always dreamed of until a brutal act of violence ripped it all away. Even though he’s found a new future working at the CB Bar Ranch in Dare, Montana, he’s not interested in trying to get back what he once had. All he wants is a quiet life that includes a job that’s worth getting up for each morning and hanging out with his best friend, a black and white Paint stallion named Koda.

But nothing prepares him for the strange twist of fate that brings not one, but two men into his life…

Brody Wilder is done hiding in the closet. As the son of a political scion, he’s spent his entire life hiding the truth about who he is just so he could inherit a legacy he never wanted. But those days are behind him and he’s starting a new life in rural Montana where he’s saving lives as a paramedic and building a successful construction business that would surely horrify his old-money, society-loving family.

After years of denying himself, he’s taking advantage of his newfound freedom by indulging in random, meaningless sexual encounters that are about pleasure, not emotion.

So no one is more surprised than him when one night in the back room of a sordid gay club leads to something more…

Can three men who came together by chance find the hope they need to build a future with each other, or will they end up letting their fears determine their destiny?

My View:

I have been waiting for Beck’s story and Sloane didn’t disappoint at all. In the last twelve months this author has become a firm favourite – thankfully she writes quickly so the families she has created are constantly evolving and moving forward. That is exactly what Beck Barretti needs to do – move forward – but his carefully constructed life, or lives, makes it difficult. In order to move on from his past he needs to embrace his future but when that future looks like it revolves around two much older men he’s not sure whether to stay or run away as fast as he can.

At 19 Beck has lived through more than a lot of people two or three times his age. Whilst he’s survived it’s important to acknowledge the damage that has been done. That’s a really tough one for his family though when Beck has kept most of it hidden. His mental health has taken a battering and his coping mechanisms constantly put him in danger – it’s that danger that brings him to Quinn and Brody and they might just be what he needs if he can slow down enough to finally be honest. Everyone who knows and loves Beck is hoping a few months away from home in Montana will help him start to heal.

Quinn had found the love of his life until it was brutally taken from him. That act of violence and his subsequent grief has left him hurt and love shy and he has no plans of changing that anytime soon. He has a job he loves at the CB Bar Ranch and his horse, who is another reminder of just what he lost, and that is all he dares to allow himself. Brody has spent his life hiding and is more than ready to stake his place in the world and be honest about who he really is. Part of that new found freedom involves sex, lots of sex, when and where he wants it but he doesn’t count on his Quinn and Beck in a club bathroom and the lasting affect these two men will have on him.

What was supposed to be a quick and dirty coming together becomes a problem a few days later when all three men discover they are working on the same project. Emotions run high as each man faces their past whilst making tentative plans for a future. There are some hot and steamy interludes but there are also a lot of tender moments as these men start to heal and find hope. This is another great story from Sloane and I love the way she has brought all these men from different walks of life together and made them into a big happy and often dysfunctional family.
